How are folks finding Mastodon of late? It feels a bit quieter for me, but still active.

(I saw folks over on eg comics Twitter noting they won’t come here, which I thought a pity. But some noted they weren’t getting any notifications these days.)

Instrument_Data,

@craiggrannell
Activity surely decreased from that boom of some months ago, but quality is high.
What matter is finding and following people, because instances are too separated

@craiggrannell I love the quality of content and discussions and engagement here. (Coming from dev Twitter.)

anonymous_x,

@craiggrannell I’m finding myself following a lot of accounts that stopped posting between November-January, or who rarely ‘toot’. And I feel too demotivated to really post much. Place almost has a “usenet after most people moved to web forums” feel, despite being the place that should be the default sanctuary for leavers of birdapp. I’m not really optimistic that this will ever really be much of a popular online venue, for better or worse.

matsimpsk,

@craiggrannell I’m still glad I’m here, but mastodon increasingly feels like eating tofu compared to the juicy burgers served up by traditional social networks.

Squozen,

@craiggrannell it’s far too busy for me to have a hope of reading my timeline.

@freitag That sounds about right. And conversation on Twitter is now completely broken for me, with Musk making good on his plans to ‘sink’ anyone lacking a blue tick. So any viral/prominent tweet gets a sea of Maga immediately beneath it, and it’s not worth fishing for good stuff.

    pacorob,

@craiggrannell I still expected more people to switch from Twitter but it appears there are still so many people, institutes, experts in many fields that remain on Twitter. I do still like the nice communication here and have found a lot of Apple enthousiasts, developers and some friends here. Also loving the third party Mastodon clients.

@pacorob I suspect federalisation and the prospect of spoofing initially put corporations and institutes off. I know for some, the megaphone was the most important thing, hence why some briefly came here but then went back to Twitter. (Conversely, you have folks like David Allen Green, who seemed to really like things being a bit quieter and a lot friendlier here.)

    omgtacos,

@craiggrannell For me, Mastodon started as a kind of a ghost town, but lately, as I’ve tracked down and followed the people I know, it’s starting to shift. Now I’m much more likely to get a response here than there.

@omgtacos I get more engagement here than anywhere else. But that engagement has dropped. Or perhaps I’m just boring people these days! Who knows?

I have eg noticed interest in the daily retro-gaming stuff – while variable – is slowly trending downwards. But then I’m over 100 entries in, and so maybe people are finding it/me stale.

    omgtacos,

@craiggrannell maybe they’re all off trying the latest social network for a while. Or maybe it’s just that the sun is shining again. Still, an interesting trend to keep an eye on.

@omgtacos Like Bluesky? I have an account there. Everything feels… really small. And there’s almost no engagement. It feels like everyone’s shouting. Odd.

    omgtacos,

@craiggrannell maybe they’re yelling at a cloud like grandpa Simpson 😂

@craiggrannell I’m still enjoying it a lot. I think it depends a ton on what you’re looking for! The trending posts and links are good for getting a slightly broader view, but I still miss content discovery a little.

I’m building a Mastodon app for iPhone though so full disclosure I’m pretty biased! Just by virtue of that I’m on here much more than I’m on other platforms so it may not be the fairest comparison haha

@jknlsn I still prefer this place over Twitter. I miss the centralisation of conversation (at least of those I mostly chatted with), and it feels like I’ve carved off half of my interests. But it is what it is. I suspect the future is a separation again – difference places for different folks. (Many of the devs, lawyers and academics landed here. Comics Twitter never came, nor did UK politics Twitter.)

@craiggrannell @jknlsn for iOS content it’s been great. None of the theme park bloggers or journalists I like to follow switched over, which has been a bummer.
