like seriously this is the hill you're going to die on? this is what you're betting your careers, your reputation, the goodwill of the community that placed the trust in you?
@whitequark
sorry for picking this up again, but genuinely curious: is all defense work considered morally reprehensible?
While the name is cringe, the company is European, and, well, there is a genocidal war of conquest going on there(=here for me) right now. I can't fault anyone in the region wanting to improve their military capabilities...
@varavs no, not all. I see weapons as morally neutral, equally usable for offense and defense, as you can surely see
Palantir built the infrastructure for concentration camps for Trump while Rust claimed to care about the Black Lives Matter movement and use that association to recruit.
@whitequark "they will lose their nonprofit status" yeah ok but if everyone not part of the foundation but part of the project tells them to fuck off, the foundation cannot reasonably be given a penalty but it defeats the purpose of the sponsorship
and the longer cushy money/help comes in from that kind of space, the less they plan for finding it elsewhere (which leaves the project even more reliant on the former)
Oh for christ sake, not another one these companies that refuse to say what they actually sell and just drool marketing speak. Put aside the military aspect, and put aside the ai. Can anyone tell me one product they sell and what it does? "Defending democracy" is not a process, it's a goal. How do you actually do that? Their website sounds like "we'll do an ai to make your country gooder, pls gib munny".
@piegames@whitequark so glad right now we took a definitive stance against this kind of crap before nixcon. We'd be right in the shit if we hadn't averted Anduril sponsorship.
@whitequark@piegames It had Anduril in the sponsors due to an honest mistake by the (mostly unpaid) organizing team, a few days before the con a bunch of people noticed and cried Alerta.
@whitequark it's so sad to see Jon's name tied to this too... I learned a lot of rust from him. I honestly can't believe how many people in rust are turning to Defense work.
@regehr@whitequark reading this whole front-page they have on their website, i can hear Jack Nicholson "you need me on that wall" monologue in A Few Good Men
