if you just stopped being scared of the command line in the last year or three — what helped you?

(no need to reply if you don’t remember, or if you’ve been using the command line comfortably for 15 years — this question isn’t for you :) )

renee,

@b0rk (within the last 5 years but)

Learning the basics of less (the pager), like less -S, helped me a ton. That was a gateway to getting comfortable with Man.

pbpaste/pbcopy (or their other OS equivalent) meant I could make a detour through hand-stitching command outputs, or copy longer bodies without writing to a file.

Having access to Ranger, or another interactive file manager, was a nice safety blanket while learning.

Had you made the connection that “Dolby Atmos” is named for “atmosphere” / “atmospheric” or was it just an opaque brand name blob in your mind?

renee,

@fasterthanlime TIL it's not "Dolby Atoms"

I’ve only read a third of this but I know I would nod just as vigorously through the rest. This is huge. This would change everything.

renee,

@fasterthanlime this looks sick! Maybe I missed it, but it feels like "introwospection can only see its own attributes" undermines a lot of the cases where this could replace the derive macros of today.

Using Serde as a concrete example, how would I do something like #[serde(flatten)]?
