We do need better safety systems on the fediverse, especially for black users.
The existence of shared blocklists is a testament to the fact that your community safety and moderation model is broken. I haveideas, and I'd love to work with any† fediverse software developers interested on building them or other federated moderation ideas. (Specifically with fediverse software developers, because most of these need to be baked in)
In the meantime, if you're starting a new instance? The least bad blocklist to start with is FediNuke. A few months ago I wouldn't have made this recommendation, but since then
Seirdy has started publishing recipts for every entry, and
The few instances I had questions about have moved up to Tier 0 or 1 or been removed
When I compared it to our list ~a month ago, about 90% of it was instances I'd already blocked for being major sources of harassment. The remaining 10% were obviously terrible.
That recommendation may conditionally move up to Tier 0 as the recipt publishing process continues; today, the delta is too hard for me to manually review
("Least bad"? Look, I hate blocklists as a moderation system on principle. But also if I never see another post from a new admin about getting harassment from detroitriotcity or sealcafe or any one of a number of ancient hellholes I will still have seen too many
