Good news! It looks like the noise you have all made has convinced Philips Hue to reconsider. They will not force data sharing on user accounts, according to their response in this The Verge article. We do await the exact changes to their policy.
@homeassistant reputation damage will not rollback. And it looks like this is not full stop in the mandatory account but just the resell part they'll opt-out. Too late, my hue bridge is firewalled and now that brand is a risk to my data management.
@homeassistant so, don't buy Hue. Seems pretty simple unless you're already invested in their products but fortunately that is one I have avoided.
Need more open product companies. Shelly seems to be one of the few bucking that trend. I'd like to see HA have a list of vendor ratings based on their openness and cooperation.
@homeassistant I believe the cloud-dependance to be the bigger issue than the data usage (which would have to be opt-in in europe anyways). That's essentially a fig leaf
This may have been just another example of pushing an egregiously bad change just to "roll it back" and implement the unpopular change they actually wanted.
@homeassistant To my eyes it reads like an account will be required but data processing will be optional. (At least for some time till the next change comes.)
Still sounds like an argument in favor of a protocol-based (Zigbee) rather than a vendor-based solution.
