@rose They rushed them out with a very conservative use-by and then over time discovered they did last longer. They’re rapid, at-home tests, janky and inaccurate, but better than squat.

I can accept that they last longer than originally thought, but I'm more worried about how effective they are detecting the current virus strains.
Still gonna use the ones we get though, but keep on double testing.
@rose Hopefully it's because they were cautious with the initial expiration dates and have extended them as more data has been collected. Ultimately it does take time to understand how long things last.
Though I wonder how sensitive it is to the conditions they're stored in, and how well the testing considers the temperature/humidity etc. variations in the warehouses and homes they're sitting for a year in.

The way this was explained to me by a immunologist friend: when they made the tests originally, they didn't know how long they would last since they were new. Estimate for expiration were conservative. Now, after they've been around for a while, we generally think they last longer than those initial estimates based on experimental testing
initially it had been a 6 month extension, and now a full year? hard to believe shit these days, i wonder if they're just handing them out to shut up the cautionary covid crowd and score political points...
