i remind everyone that the house republican clown show is live on c-span and the vote to remove the speaker is next. if you’re into clown shows, now’s a good time to start streaming. #uspol
it is a multiple stage clown show, so be aware there will be first a vote not to vote and then if they don’t vote not to vote then they will vote whether to vacate the chair and ditch their own speaker. then ALL they can do is vote on a new speaker and last time that took them 15 goes across a few days. #uspol
i’m saying we don’t know how long the clown show is basically. no wait that’s wrong. we don’t know how long this episode of the clown show is. the clown show in general is FUCKING ETERNAL.
bring back jp patches because that was good and this is just tragic
i think we're past even giving them as much credit as to call them clowns. they are just primates flinging their own feces at each other and screaming incoherently.
i love how they’re still saying things like “I yield three minutes to my friend” and i’m like stfu foghorn leghorn and just vote already you absolute clusterfuck of shitheels
not funny reminder: the magats want to crash the economy assuming quite possibly correctly that low-info reactionary americans will do the usual dumbassery of voting for whoever isn’t in power, flicking the switch back and forth and ignoring what that actually does
Again, a bit more seriously: this really is Republicans demanding the same things Republicans have been demanding, and using Republican tactics to do it, which is: rule by minority, in this case, by a minority of the minority. No compromise, no such thing as a “loyal opposition”to work with, and if they don’t get it, they’ll break the House.
It’s “our country to rule, or no country to rule” writ ever more small.
Don't want to count chickens but this vote will take a while; if McCarthy is removed, I'm kinda thinking the closest to a "good" outcome here is an outside member gets elected as a caretaker Speaker and nothing past minimal housekeeping passes until 2025.
The "very bad" outcome is that the Republicans flat out refuse to allow a new speaker and the MAGAts get what they want: a crashed economy in winter and spring 2024.
That's the problem. In 2022, we (the voters) gave control of the House to a party that is actively engaged in trying to overthrow the United States government, and that is knowingly conspiring with a foreign enemy to destroy our country. Our wretched, incompetent political press told us we should do that, because gas prices in the United States, like everywhere else in the world, were kind of high at the time.
No business can proceed now until a new speaker is elected. The US federal legislature is effectively suspended.
ETA: Not technically true, though they aren't going to be do anything until they've elected a new speaker. It's difference since some relatively-recent continuity-of-government changes. See here:
so the speaker can elect a pro tempore to run things temporarily? can mccarthy do that on his way out? if not, does some other office in the house move up to pro tempore?
yet another historic first i'd just as soon have not experienced personally in my lifetime...
and just saw that mchenry is it and does have limited power.
but you can get the GOP will continue to try to shut down the govt and fail to pass a budget again after mccarthy get the 45 day extension. what a mess.
also in the "how does this keep happening"... whenever the economy has been bad, the GOP gets credit as "good with the economy" and gets a bump. even though most of the true economic disasters in the last 40 years have been of GOP manufacture. yet another reason why they feel that trashing the economy is in their best interest. bastards...
