Been looking into Game Boy games that I missed out on and damn, the prices are just insane!
Especially if you want more than a cart only copy with the label half rubbed off. 😱

I might have to finally consider and look into an ever drive as I’m not paying €500 for a copy of Elevator Action, no matter how much I love the game!

(And also since I’ve had a copy since the 90s. 😅

@OutofPrintArchive I go cart only for those reason. I actually do have elevator action too. It cost about £8. But also it’s cart only and Japanese.

@yesterzine
I’ve been looking at Japanese versions as well since I don’t mind reading some hiragana and katakana. And the artwork and manuals are much prettier I find as well.

@OutofPrintArchive I do have one near mint Japanese game but slightly less excitingly it’s Tiny Toons : Babs big break

@yesterzine The Tiny Toons games were quite fun though.

@OutofPrintArchive Yeah but it’s weird that my one Japanese thing is American!

@yesterzine
haha, I didn't even think that far. 😅

@OutofPrintArchive I used to collect Gameboy almost exclusively pre-pandemic. It has a great library and most games were very affordable. I haven't bought a GB game since 2021 though; the prices are not worth it. I bought an Everdrives X3, which is very affordable, and would never look back. I thought flash carts wouldn't be for me, but I since bought a GBA and NES Everdrives as well. It's more important to me to actually play a game than to hold it. Simply playing translations was worth it.

OutofPrintArchive,
@OutofPrintArchive@mstdn.games avatar

@scribblemacher yeah. Being able to play translated games as well as the ones I’d never be able to afford is a super big draw.
Also the battery backup issue for quite a few games has been playing in my mind…

@OutofPrintArchive it's funny I still have carts with original working batteries, but yeah, I also have a GBx cart for dumping saves so they can be restored after a battery change and/or battery death. I guess having preservation tools is also part of the hobby.

OutofPrintArchive,
@OutofPrintArchive@mstdn.games avatar

@scribblemacher it’s really insane when you think about it. 30 years on and certain batteries still work, while phone batteries seem to die after just a couple of years. 😅

@OutofPrintArchive I made bank selling all my old Game Boy games last year, and was really quite happy with some of those prices… 😅

Bluewall,
@Bluewall@mstdn.games avatar

@OutofPrintArchive Yep, Emulation is pretty perfect for Game Boy. The prices are way too high to justify buying the cart.

OutofPrintArchive,
@OutofPrintArchive@mstdn.games avatar

@Bluewall I have to say, I’m still tempted for certain games that are very close to my heart. But it has to be reasonable.
Even for a maniac that has no self control like me. 😅

@OutofPrintArchive I was thinking about buying some repro carts for the GBA Metroids. But I’ve already got an EZ Flash Omega cart, which is more than worth it considering how many GB games are like 5 hours long.

OutofPrintArchive,
@OutofPrintArchive@mstdn.games avatar

@UncannyKyle don’t get me wrong.
I don’t mind paying a fair price for retro games. But this is just ridiculous.
If they were €30-60 that would be great.
With some rare games going for 200, perhaps even 250.
But I’m seeing lots of common games around the €150 mark, which is just insane!
And the more uncommon ones for 500-1000 or even more.

UncannyKyle,
@UncannyKyle@mstdn.games avatar

@OutofPrintArchive especially crazy considering GB games were originally like $30. I’ll pay for goods but not at like 2-3x MSRP.

COMPU73E,
@COMPU73E@mstdn.games avatar

@OutofPrintArchive I'm curious, what's the most you've ever paid for a game?

I paid $270 for the NTSC PS2 release of SMT Devil Summoner 2, the one that comes with the Raiho plushie (that figure includes postage and import VAT)

Worth it though, as it's one of my favourite things!

OutofPrintArchive,
@OutofPrintArchive@mstdn.games avatar

@COMPU73E I’d have to look it up, but I’m sure that it has to be Capcom vs SNK on Japanese Neo Geo AES.
It was the very first AES game that I was able to buy as it released. And ironically the last one ever released. 😅
I believe it was €360 or 380.
The next one doesn’t even come close I think.
Perhaps something like Are noSurge on Vita?
That one might have been 180. But I’m just guessing right now since I’m at work.
