RamenCatholic,

The Fediverse is starting to feel unwelcoming to me as a person who has spiritual beliefs.

I agree that: Religion, like any philosophy, is often used as a tool of oppression. That is evil.

I hope you can agree with me that: People of Faith & Spiritual Humanists can be as awesome AND as awful as the members of ANY other group.

So ...

If ya'll could stop calling people like me stupid (or worse, fascist), I'd be appreciative. Many of us are out here fighting the baddies alongside you.

@RamenCatholic I'm not a believer, but Christian socialists are some of the best comrades I have

RamenCatholic,

@mattyroses Truth.

I was biased against Christians for a long time myself. Then I started meeting liberal Christians in college!

ProjectFearlessness,

@RamenCatholic
Hard-line Atheism is by far the most intolerant religion of them all. What they say in the name of their not-god is unbelievable. They better start praying they are right about the afterlife, otherwise they have a might judgement coming.

Amazing how useful that Block button is....

RamenCatholic,

@FiveSeventeen true, but some of 'these people' are otherwise very cool; they seem to be dealing with religious trauma, and I'd like to give 'em a chance to heal themselves without harming others. ❤️

@RamenCatholic

The thing is, you have a choice, and you can exercise that choice. Keep those you think will improve, bin those who are lost causes.

RamenCatholic,

@FiveSeventeen I will take this advice when someone effects (affects?) my mental health.

Hi Rev, Jules,

I love your post. It's so good to know, that you are here.

I am convinced, that all humans on Earth can act together to make this a place, we can all live in peace.

It should not matter, that there are different believes or world views, as long as these accept the value of every human being & tolerate other believes.

(This is from someone, who's not a member of any 'school of religion' - but has friends in many different religions, interested in all of them)

  • RamenCatholic,

    @nathan you seem to be assuming that I'm a Christian. That's a swing and a miss!

    Nice try, though.

    Dasy2k1,
    RamenCatholic,

    @Dasy2k1 I essentially agree, although I feel like it's ok to discuss (more than random penii would be, at least) in public.

    Dasy2k1,

    @RamenCatholic that's true discussion is fine.
    Waving it in people's faces less so

    RamenCatholic,

    @Dasy2k1 no worries, I'm too busy waving my Freak flag 🤪

    Judeet88,

    @RamenCatholic Good posts. I think you're either set to be a believer, or you're not. A bit like you're either naturally good at music or maths, or you're not. But in all these cases for me, it depends entirely on whether you're a good person doing good things or not.

    Some of us don't call names, but are here with a sincere desire to explore how people arrive at their beliefs. Please let me know if you're interested in a public discussion of your road to belief. Thanks.

    RamenCatholic,

    @tomcapuder I'm a spiritual humanist, which (to me) is basically a fancy agnostic. The road that got me there was "being raised in a cult-lite" and walking away to find my own path.

    I just lean towards there probably being some sort of Universal Consciousness of which we are all a part. If I'm right, cool. If I'm wrong, oh well; maybe I'll get it right next life.

    tomcapuder,

    @RamenCatholic

    Thanks for replying. I'm a secular humanist and an agnostic atheist.

    How did you conclude that there's probably a Universal Consciousness? How dd you calculate the probability?

    RamenCatholic,

    @tomcapuder I have a few reasons, all of which are Real to me.

    1. I drowned as a toddler, and (lucky me) my very first memory is being in The Light. I sensed It as a Being made of many beings & It loved me.

    2. It's comforting to me and just "makes sense." YMMV.

    (And, yes, when your first memory is a NDE, it kinda fucks you up.)

    tomcapuder,

    @RamenCatholic

    How do you reconcile reason 1 with the science that indicates the effects of NDEs are generated by the brain's being deprived of oxygen? In other words, how do you know you "sensed it" accurately?

    RamenCatholic,

    @tomcapuder I made a choice to believe it. Two things can be true at one time.

    Perhaps an NDE is a form of a state of consciousness (like that achieved by meditation or entheogens) in which one can reach "God" or "the Source" or whatever.

    And perhaps it was a delusion, but as long as I don't force anyone else to believe it ... then it's an essentially harmless way to view the universe with my puny human brain.

    tomcapuder,

    @RamenCatholic

    Also, can you really "choose to believe" something? The way I see it, you're either convinced a claim is true or not.

    RamenCatholic,

    @tomcapuder works for me. YMMV.

    RamenCatholic,

    @tomcapuder I thought about this for a little while, and I genuinely believe that religion is always a choice.

    I look at it like this:

    My mom chooses to believe in religion that's gonna send me to Hell.

    I choose to be spiritual, instead of religious, and I choose not to believe in Hell.

    tomcapuder,

    @RamenCatholic

    How do you define being "spiritual"?

    RamenCatholic,

    @tomcapuder very carefully :D

    But seriously, I think "of the spirit or soul" (as opposed to the physical body/world) is a good starting point.

    Beyond that, I think we have to allow room for personal interpretation.

    How 'bout you?

    tomcapuder,

    @RamenCatholic

    I don't believe that we have a "soul" or "spirit," by which I mean a sentient part of us independent of the brain that survives our physical death. I think that once the brain dies, game's over. So that's a big "no" on any kind of eternal life, IMO.

    tomcapuder,

    @RamenCatholic

    While two things can be true at once, two opposing things can't. Either there's a Universal Consciousness or there's not.

    Do you believe other things that you know might not be true, or is that just confined to the metaphysics realm? Is there value to false comfort?

    SaltWaterAndCourage,

    @RamenCatholic I’m learning to look for shared spiritual values in my friends with whom i do not share views on religion or politics. This mindset shift has been transformative.

    @RamenCatholic :bd239:

    RamenCatholic,

    I believe that the problem is really greed (for power, resources, whatever). Always has been, always will be.

    Humanity is a greedy species, and we'll justify that greed by any means necessary.

    Some people wrap religion around their greed to hide their real agenda. Hell, they may even believe their own bullshit.

    (This post is sponsored by Chronic Pain Grumpiness: "Get Off My Lawn, Whippersnappers!")

    Herefordrob,

    @RamenCatholic "greed: a selfish and excessive desire for more of something (such as money) than is needed" Merriam-Webster, excessive being the operative word. People are led to greed through ignorance in order to overcome this vulnerability we need universally. This not a justification it's a fact.

    RamenCatholic,

    @Herefordrob I'm not sure if you agree or disagree with me.

    Herefordrob,

    @RamenCatholic I would say people 'can' be greedy and like many aspects of humanity it can be manipulated by others. The way to take an insightful approach to choice is through which is also manipulated by a plutocratic "leadership"

    RamenCatholic,

    @Herefordrob gotcha. Yeah, I basically agree.
