There's a weird gendered thing where after every talk or article of mine coming out some male academic sends me a bunch of their articles or books to read.
Which is nice at times to see who works on what but it has never been a woman or nonbinary person. Only men.

I don't know if it's just men being more aggressive in pushing themselves and their careers or if it's men having a hard time making a compliment without overloading it with some weird transaction.

@mewbassprr sometimes, sometimes about my age. But I think people are often not fully aware how old I am so they might think they are older.

Oh and also: They usually have more academic credentials than I do (at least PhD, often Professor)

@tante Back in the day on Flickr (maybe still, haven't been there in years), when you'd post a photo you'd get a bunch of replies like, "nice photo, check out my work [link to their profile]"

Maybe they liked the photo, but it was always stupidly obvious that the whole point of the interaction was to promote themselves.

Sure, sending you books is a different league but perhaps it's just an upscale version of the same thing.

@tante Or men being more eager in making connections that they consider "worthwhile"? As a woman, I would probably wait to meet somebody in person to get to know them AND then ask, whether I can send them some if my work. But honestly, what's wrong in just writing someone and sending my work to them?

@tipap I'm not saying it's wrong in general (it sometimes is when people send me their book and keep sending me mails asking if I read it ;)).

I just find it strange that women never do that.
