One thing I want to point out to people new to cmedia (or even international cmedia fandom with no connection to the cfandom side of things) is that engaging with cmedia (from China) has specific undercurrents:

  • Things have to undergo censorship review
  • There are shifting lines in the sand about what themes/stories/content is okay and not okay (deliberately left somewhat vague so people self-censor a lot)
  • Actors/actress can and have been cancelled/edited out from their own works for tax evasion/moral misconduct/visiting Japanese war shrine (don't debate me on that photo, I'm not interested in discussing whether or not any of these are valid reasons for disappearing people's works, so it really doesn't matter if it's real of faked).

@geraineon not to add, that there has been a continous radicalization in the past few years, with all of the points mentioned above.

(so you get now higher quality Dramas - but much more censoring and nationalistic themese. Or you watch older Dramas with less quality, but also less censoring)

geraineon,
@geraineon@sakurajima.social avatar

@bookstardust Yeah, and my friends mentioned that things are a lot more tense now in fandom spaces compared to ten years ago when she was a student.

@geraineon LIfe in China is becoming harder each day.
But somehow C-Media is also getting more popular in western circles.
I do believe, though, that western people will learn eventually how to handle chinese media and get how the censoring and stuff works.

geraineon,
@geraineon@sakurajima.social avatar

@bookstardust yeah, it's kinda weird to see it happen, personally. I have seen some discussions here and there wondering if Chinese people from China don't care about the messaging in the dramas, so I just wanted to point out the context here.

bookstardust,
@bookstardust@bildung.social avatar

@geraineon totally get! Make it easier for people to understand how it works.
Until you reach the skill level of "managing to read the critic of the regime between the lines in a drama and wondering how the censors did let the Drama pass through"

geraineon,
@geraineon@sakurajima.social avatar

@bookstardust and also understanding that endorsing government messaging can help a drama air (unfortunately, money talks too).

geraineon,
@geraineon@sakurajima.social avatar

So, as you are watching the dramas, you can keep that in mind. If you are wondering, "Do Chinese people in China discuss critically these dramas?", the answer is probably, "Yes, but not in the spaces you can see because too active a discussion gets shut down, if it crosses an invisible line."

Also fyi, the biggest social media platform there is going to impose a rule that ensures ppl with >100k followers display their workplace information on their public profile, and >200k followers display their real names on their public profile, and it's gonna get rolled out to bilibili too (unsure how many followers will be required to do so), so it will be literally dangerous for big accounts to discuss anything.

*this is supposed to curtail disinformation. but conveniently, now even the veneer of anonymity is gone

Related to all this: https://www.scmp.com/tech/tech-trends/article/3192843/chinese-social-media-users-are-flocking-decentralised-mastodon

(Douban has been gutted, about 2 or 3 years ago now. It used to be where a lot of these discussions are)

cendawanita,

@geraineon
Lol scmp reporting on this should be a yellow alert for us to take another look at our op-sec so we don't accidentally burn our fellow users & mutuals to any state apparatus.

geraineon,
@geraineon@sakurajima.social avatar

@cendawanita lol yeah. it didn't even occur to me but well... state eyes, yay. social media is danger to begin with regardless of whether it's corpo or random user admin.

cendawanita,

@geraineon
and fedi is so much more riskier for the same reason it's not easy to kill it. Improved privacy & migration settings need more urgency now, have to bully the Europeans to pay attention or it'll just be like Naomi Wu again x 1000

geraineon,
@geraineon@sakurajima.social avatar

@cendawanita ... I feel like europeans (who are devs) do not understand this danger very much, but yes, very much agreed on the need to improve privacy and migration, also need to be very clear where servers are located.

@geraineon @cendawanita I noticed that Chinese users on the fediverse tend to speak quite openly. Whether their confidence in the fediverse is warranted or not, I’m not sure, but I’d assume that they know better than I do.

cendawanita,

@rakyat
I'm less worried about them, that's why I mentioned we have to tighten up our opsec so we don't accidentally burn them
@geraineon

@cendawanita Got it, I might need to be more aware of what I boost/translate, for one.
@geraineon

cendawanita,

@rakyat
Yeah, even if I appreciate it as banana I don’t mind sacrificing direct knowledge in this kind of cases
@geraineon

geraineon,
@geraineon@sakurajima.social avatar

@rakyat @cendawanita I feel like fedi is a different bucket of danger... I wouldn't trust fedi to be safe myself! But maybe they think eyes not on here yet?

rakyat,

@geraineon Maybe any social media that doesn’t require validating one’s real life identity feels comparatively safe enough. That said even I try to avoid posting identifiable info.
