@parismarx Hey Paris! I listen to your Tech Won’t Save Us regularly, but every now and then I come across unproductive ways of countering right-wing or conservative arguments and the latest episode with Julia Black had one regarding: ”Facts don’t care about feelings.”

The way you handle in the show fails at not ”walking a mile in the other’s shoes”, and you miss the obvious point that the other has already invalidated your counterargument that feelings matter.

@parismarx Now. If you proceed to say that nope feelings do matter, it doesn’t matter if you’re right or wrong because it’s not moving any needles on the other end.

To have a fruitful counterargument, you should accept the other’s argument and NOT attack their point of view. ”Which facts? The ones you defined?”, for example and quote counter-facts first.

From there you can then proceed to facts that also point out feelings indeed do correspond to useful evolutionary mechanics, too.

@parismarx Anyway, keep up the good work, and hopefully we can use this network between us for your audience to help you make the show better!

@gimulnautti @parismarx Why counter the Right with facts, reason, logic, or argument? Their core belief is that reality bends to their will. Rejection of objective reality and logic is an expression of power, and there is no higher value. "Reject modernity" etc.

The only counter-argument that works is ridicule. Laugh at them for being afraid of $noun and for getting hysterical. Deny them dignity. Deny them pride. And always, ALWAYS deny them victory by violence.

@opendna @parismarx Why?

Because you’ll lose.

The right has an endless supply of cold-hearted brutes to send at you, not afraid to deal with neo-nazis, or even organised crime. They do violence much better than the left.

The right WANTS violence, but has to put on a suit and tie to appear respectable. If their hand is forced, that suit goes away.

If you’re gonna play, at least play on your strengths.

Or perhaps you’re one of their trolls? Doing good work there!

@gimulnautti @parismarx Did Poland provoke Germany? Did Korea provoke Japan? Were the KKK responding in self-defense? Was MLK the aggressor? Come on.

The Right brings violence because it is the purest expression of their ideal. They bring it first against minorities and marginalized for two reasons: because the victims can't defend themselves, and to recruit from the liberal majority will be willing Good Germans.

Their success requires your obedience.

@opendna @parismarx You’re totally confused. Obidience has nothing to do with my argument. Civility is not obedience, it’s a choice.

It’s ok to RESPOND to violence by violence when civility fails.

That’s why it’s incredibly stupid to serve the ball in an opponent’s court that does violence better than you.

You deny them the advantage they have (cruelty) by not going to violence first.
