ok look I know this is really stupid and pedantic, but come on, we’ve had 26 years to learn this

It's Wi-Fi

not Wifi or WiFi or wifi or wi fi

Wi-Fi. Hyphenated. Both words capitalized.

thank you for coming to my ted talk

(while you're here, “log in" is two words when being used as a verb… your login button or link should not say "login”, because the action they take is to "log in”)

enron,

@marcoarment There’s nothing quite like seeing a self-described pedantic post insisting on the correct use of capitalization and punctuation while riddled with incorrect capitalization and missing punctuation.

ben_seven,

@marcoarment maybe it used to be, sure. Language though; does what it wants.

@hawkeward@mastodon.social avatar

@marcoarment E-mail → email. E-sports/eSports → esports.

Pigeonhole, chickpea, logjam. They’re blogs not WebLogs.

Few things move at the same speed as modern technology, but language is one of them. So WiFi, wifi, Wi-Fi—all valid.

jefframes,
@jefframes@mastodon.social avatar

@marcoarment I had a Google fiber installer repeatedly refer to the fiber jack, my Ethernet cable and the general existence of network access as “your Wi-Fi” even when I tried to disambiguate. That’s definitely not an isolated incident. We may have a little further to go before we tackle the spelling.

park,
@park@mastodon.social avatar

@marcoarment So do you still write “e-mail”?

rsfinn,
@rsfinn@mastodon.social avatar

@marcoarment Congratulations, you’re now officially Old. Welcome.

kommen,
@kommen@hachyderm.io avatar

@marcoarment it’s WLAN

doriKeet,

@marcoarment I only recently started un-hyphenating email (e-mail). Language is determined by usage. At age 70, I’ve had lots of time to learn this the hard way.

spitfire,
@spitfire@mastodon.social avatar

@marcoarment Or as Germans say: WLAN;)

petergarner,
@petergarner@mastodon.world avatar

@marcoarment As a language professional, I have to disagree. There's no real reason for wifi to be hyphenated or a proper noun (even internet is rarely a proper noun nowadays). Language usage changes. It's a thing. And you're old enough now to see those changes happen. It wasn't that long ago that the use of the “singular they" was frowned upon in formal texts. Now it's commonplace (and that's a good thing!). If you want language to be static, learn French. ducks

marcoarment,
@marcoarment@mastodon.social avatar

@petergarner I believe it's different in this case because it's an actively maintained trademark for this specific feature. It's a proper noun.

You wouldn't expect to see windows pcs or macs or lte coverage or verizon or usb or thunderbolt or hdmi in any remotely formal context, so why is Wifi or wifi somehow different?

petergarner,
@petergarner@mastodon.world avatar

@marcoarment Well, I learned something. I had no idea it was a trademark. Thanks for for that!

@marcoarment
You're just testing humor levels (or absence) on Threads vs Mastodon, right?! 🙃

vanitalo,
@vanitalo@mastodon.social avatar

@marcoarment Oh-Kay 🤪🫥

thisisfine,

@marcoarment Yes! Same for ‘setup’ and ‘set up’.

sondek,

@marcoarment OK, look I know this is a bit pedantic but ‘TED’ is all capitalised in TED talk.

Also, really sorry, but there is no ‘Z’ in capitalised (🇬🇧)

It’s the differences that make our world interesting. 😀

SebastianArcq,
@SebastianArcq@mastodon.social avatar

@marcoarment had to look that up, it’s really capitalized in AE. Why? BE’s wi-fi makes more sense https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/wi-fi

jeffschmitz,

@marcoarment E-Mail?

sayrer,
@sayrer@mastodon.social avatar

@marcoarment lol, it is the trademark (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi-Fi)

but it sounds like other things in other languages, so it will just be constantly screwed up (weefee, whiffy, etc)

GQB,

@marcoarment Hmmm… typing wifi, which everyone understands, vs double-tap to caplock, WI, tap for special characters, “-”, double-tap to caplock again, FI…

No thanks. wifi is perfectly fine. 😉

atlds,
@atlds@mstdn.social avatar

@marcoarment Personally I find WiFi also acceptable. But none of the other ones please.

Preloading,

@marcoarment No, its IEEE 802.11

rregets,

@marcoarment Next time do backup and back up

ddlevine,
@ddlevine@mastodon.social avatar

@marcoarment I added it in the iOS keyboard replacement so I’d always spell it right.

KaraLG84,
@KaraLG84@dragonscave.space avatar

@marcoarment I think I've used every variation of that under the sun, and probably still will.

thomasareed,

@marcoarment @joekissell Can I just say I still think the name Wi-Fi is stupid? It should have been called something else, but we’re stuck with a stupid name now.

clueless_capybara,

@marcoarment you don't decide how I login to my wi fi, you're not my mo ther
