Windows CE, Microsoft’s stunted middle child, reaches end of support at 26 years

From netbooks and PDAs to ATMs, voting kiosks, and ungainly presidential phones.

mostly_linux,

@arstechnica The Sega Dreamcast utilized Microsoft's Windows CE as an optional OS in the late '90s. This move aimed to entice developers with a familiar platform for porting PC games. Though not all Dreamcast games used Windows CE, its presence highlighted the system's adaptability, especially when paired with its built-in modem for online play.

@arstechnica WinCE was appropriately named. Did we ever.

mesirii,

@arstechnica good riddance. Programming for CE was such a pain (compact framework) and the devices and apps were always painful for users.

@traecer I had a Motorola MPx200 running Windows Mobile. That was, uh, not a great experience.

@arstechnica How will my Dreamcast copy of Sega Rally 2 get urgent security updates now?

@arstechnica Small detail: "In 2016, at the height of the US presidential election, it was revealed that a fantastically complex, $4,750 Windows CE phone was the only real option for the National Security Agency's preferred secure White House phone in 2009. Then-Secretary-of-State Hillary Clinton did not or could not use that, so she used her own BlackBerry and email server, and we have been hearing about it ever since."

birdpoof,

@arstechnica

ATMs and voting kiosks 😱

@arstechnica So, THIS was getting support until now, but Windows 10 only gets less than two more years?
