Hey everyone!

I'm working on a video to see what the Linux community (or at least people who follow me) actually use.

So, I created a little form, hosted on my Nextcloud (hopefully it's up to the task...)

It's only up for 2 days, so don't hesitate to share it around, it will help me "touch grass" and see if my preconceived notions are confirmed, or invalidated!

https://nextcloud.thelinuxexp.com/index.php/apps/forms/s/XQRzMrs8QTtCjDfSyP4koA9o

Of course, it's all anonymous, no personal data, it's just for the purposes of creating the video.

New high-end iPads are around the corner; please let me run macOS on them

Op-ed: The iPad needs more than a simple hardware refresh to fix what ails it.

@arstechnica This won’t happen because Apple values the fact that IpadOS is locked down. OSX isn’t.

@thelinuxEXP Agreed! I enjoyed the first one but the combat was annoying and the story draaaaged on. I think I’m going to wait for the PC release.

Banks use your deposits to loan money to fossil-fuel, emissions-heavy firms

Your $1,000 in the bank creates emissions equal to a flight from NYC to Seattle.

You may already be familiar with Proton VPN’s Quick Connect feature, but did you know you can set up different profiles too? 👇

These profiles allow you to customize how you connect to . You can:
👉 Choose a specific country or server
👉 Change the VPN protocol
👉 Use Secure Core (double-hop)

Here’s how: https://protonvpn.com/support/connection-profiles/.

mostly_linux,

@protonvpn Why do you hate Linux users?

Proton VPN - No longer blocking malware, ads, and trackers? [FIXED]

[Edit: With guidance from Proton Support, I switched VPN protocols in the application’s preferences menu (protonvpn.com/…/how-to-change-vpn-protocols/), from IKEv2 to Smart, and afterwards I started seeing ads and trackers (etc.) blocked on the application’s GUI again. I’ll post any other relevant info I learn of here.]...

@EmperorHenry @streetfestival @Firefox is a horrible browser if you want to block ads and protect your privacy. It’s funded by Google. Try Librewolf instead.

mostly_linux,
@mostly_linux@mastodon.social avatar

@Pantherina Firefox is busted and Mozilla is broken. Need to revert to core principles. In the meantime use Librewolf, a better privacy focused fork of Firefox, and Betterbird, a better privacy focused for of Thunderbird.

They’ve raked in BILLIONS from Google by selling their customers. In the FOSS world, the customer should be a partner, not the product.

I keep seeing people online saying that #Linux isn’t ready for professionals, or that the Linux desktop isn’t for doing real work, or this usual « year of Linux desktop » meme.

So I thought I’d address the topic, because Linux is undeniably already being used by professionals all around the world, and definitely has a lot of tools to do professional work, either #OpenSource or proprietary:

https://youtu.be/BlUFXUA9R48

mostly_linux,
@mostly_linux@mastodon.social avatar

@thelinuxEXP Absolutely, here's a concise response:

Linux for professionals:

  1. Customizable: Tailor it to your exact needs.
  2. Secure: Strong defenses against malware and viruses.
  3. Developer-Friendly: Native tools galore.
  4. Open Source: No proprietary walls; modify freely.
  5. Cost-Effective: Powerful tools, zero price tag.

P.S. If there's an open-source video platform link, that'd be even better than YouTube!

Windows CE, Microsoft’s stunted middle child, reaches end of support at 26 years

@arstechnica The Sega Dreamcast utilized Microsoft's Windows CE as an optional OS in the late '90s. This move aimed to entice developers with a familiar platform for porting PC games. Though not all Dreamcast games used Windows CE, its presence highlighted the system's adaptability, especially when paired with its built-in modem for online play.

Elon’s tweet disparaging the need to support the Wikipedia has stuck with me. How could anyone, even a creepy libertarian who hates government find fault with wikipedia? The wikipedia is an independent not for profit corporation. It’s the way the libertarians always assure us public goods can still exist even in their fantasy futures. And in this limited area the wikipedia largely works. A backbone for the web of human knowledge. But somehow even this is still objectionable.

mostly_linux,
@mostly_linux@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird While I respect the value Wikipedia brings as a decentralized platform for knowledge, it's essential to maintain a critical eye on any information source. Libertarian ideals advocate for freedom of information and minimal central control, but there have been concerns about attempts by certain groups, including woke extremists, to influence or censor Wikipedia content.
