atomicpoet,

I'm currently on the hunt for the most suitable default front-end for . I've actually checked out Mastodon's front-end, but unfortunately, there are a few issues that make it less than ideal for our needs.

I've noticed that Soapbox seems to be the best technical option available, but for various reasons, I'd prefer to avoid using that software.

Considering Akkoma was forked from Pleroma, I was wondering if there might be an ethical fork of Soapbox out there? If such a fork existed, would you be interested in lending your support or contributing to it?

@atomicpoet Akkoma, Pleroma,... - I wonder what the difference between all those services is and how they differ from . I understand that some of these services offer more features than others. But at the same time, it does not make sense to maintain user accounts on several different services.
Therefore, instead of investing time and resources in may "island" services (which are of course connected), why not creating one (distributed) service that's really good for everyone?

atomicpoet,

@dans_root Well, the difference between Akkoma and Mastodon has largely to do with resources and expense. I can get very expensive to run a Mastodon server and needs at least 4GB of RAM (minimum) to run well. However, an Akkoma server can be run on substantially less resources for the fraction of the cost.

@atomicpoet OK, I don’t understand the details, but I understand that it’s mainly a difference for instance hosts. From a user perspective, I find it rather confusing to have many similar services, for which you would need separate accounts.
Some time ago I tried to use and in parallel but stayed with Mastodon after a couple of days, mainly because I had native apps (mostly one) for it on all my devices.

atomicpoet,

@dans_root Hey, well it seems that the main difference, from a user's point of view, is mostly about the features and user interface. Personally, I prefer Firefish because it allows me quoted boosts, has a nice character count limit, and supports Markdown, which is pretty important to me. However, if you're content with Mastodon, that's totally fine too!

@atomicpoet there is a hard non arsehole fork, but hm I forget the name, I didn't know I'd need to remember it...

atomicpoet,

@lsintoni No, this is the first time I've heard of this -- and thank you!

atomicpoet,

@django @phanpy I know of Phanpy, but I'm looking for something I can deploy as the default UI for lots of Akkoma servers.

@atomicpoet @phanpy exactly what I was thinking, it would need a bit of work to have a registration page, and a direct login instead of the OAuth flow. I don't know how difficult that would be though.
