Mastodon friends. I've got a search results problem.

When you search for me by name none of the results are... me.

They are all scraped "unofficial mirrors"

Thoughts on how to fix this?

It's a double issue:

1 - how to get my own correct result to show.

2- flag these empty mirrors as spam

@jsrailton Mastodon is about to ship a new update which will put anyone with a verified website at the top of any search. Since you have a website you should do that when you’re able https://joinmastodon.org/verification

DataDrivenMD,

@jsrailton I noticed you have your own website, but that the link is not verified. I would start there b/c self-verified accounts are better than nothing. Once you verify your ownership of your website, then search results will indicate that you have a verified link on your profile.

stevesplace,

@DataDrivenMD @jsrailton Interesting. I have an artist's account at YouTube and another at SoundCloud, which both verified me, but we don't use these for verification. I don't currently have a website, though I could create one for this which would seem to defeat the purpose of uniquely identifying me, as anyone can buy a URL and create a poser link back to it, spoofing someone else. Seems like it needs some creative ideas.

jfmezei,

@jsrailton I asked similar questions to my local admin the policy of mirrors. IOm most instances, the "mirrorrs" from twitter are setup without knowledge of the Twitter user and are one way. Sending message to the mastodon bot wont result in it reaching the user on twitter.
Have you checked these accounts to see what they post? If they pretend to be you and post nonsense then there is valid reason to compain to instance manager.

oliphant,

@jsrailton We've been sharing these lists for awhile.

If you go to https://mastodon.social/about and click on 'Moderated Servers' you'll already see several birdsite live mirrors blocked.

The problem is that new ones come up.

If you're seeing some that aren't blocked, report those domains to your mods.

And maybe encourage them to import a BirdsiteLive blocklist regularly.

I haven't read any other responses yet, but these "mirrors" are usually @BirdsiteLIVE instances that you can claim ownership of. It's also possible to change your Twitter avatar / bio to point to your preferred account.

The software will copy those changes over eventually.

@jsrailton

konstantin,

@jsrailton @Em0nM4stodon it’s also concerning that the only way to tell they’re “empty” is because it says 0 followers which can also mean they’re legitimate accounts who have changed their privacy settings to hide their followers.

Accounts that hide their followers still show the number, just not which accounts. In other words, they don't have zero followers.

@konstantin @Em0nM4stodon @jsrailton

konstantin,

@tcely @Em0nM4stodon @jsrailton Pleroma/Akkoma and others allow one to hide the number of followers as well. There is no way to determine if the follower count is public, if it’s even up to date (your instance may not have the latest value) or it’s just 0. Follower counts can also be faked very easily by updating the value in the database of an instance.

@jsrailton This is one of the things that bothers me with the Fediverse, I think these unofficial mirrors aren’t helpful in building a larger community. In fact, I think it is one of the reasons some of the larger Twitter accounts don’t come here, they see it as impersonation.

It's not impersonation, it's software copying their Twitter account. Typically, @BirdsiteLIVE which lets you claim ownership in current versions.

As an example, my account was claimed so some instances point to my account here instead.
