The Humane Ai Pin introduction video is… bizarre. https://hu.ma.ne/

Super low-energy, low production value, and the first few minutes are a list of shortcomings and what it doesn't do before they tell us anything positive or demonstrate any features.

Are they trying to succeed? This vibe almost feels like they ran out of steam and are hoping to be acquired so they don't need to go through with it.

@marcoarment it has some weird things, like not eating the nuts, or saying “it translates this to Spanish”, then it’s a very bad Spanish translation (like Google translate kind of thing)

@marcoarment It’s a Google Demo, or a Microsoft Demo
in the same basket of tech demos that will not work as real products

freinfeld,

@marcoarment the good thing about it being a pin is that Robert Scoble won’t be able to wear it while showering.

@marcoarment Maybe they aren’t excited because this isn’t a product solving any actual problems…and thus why be excited?😂

@marcoarment I have felt the entire point of this company all along has been to hype their way into getting acquired. Pump up the mental health and social benefits of less cell phone usage and then slap some AI in there and hope you can find some silly money.

@marcoarment The product seems very silly (I cannot tell why it even exists), and some examples are problematic (don’t read the messages from your friends! don’t buy from your local bookshop!), but I kinda like the understated intro video, much better than a commercial or a big keynote — I do think it’s on purpose to appear humble though.

czeins,

@marcoarment Music really helps with pacing and energy and they intentionally decided to create an experience devoid of music, which I think was wrong.

@marcoarment
He forgot to use “make me sound more excited“ at the beginning of the presentation.

@marcoarment Notice they’re promoting shopping online rather than supporting local businesses. Peak techbro BS right there. Good make sure that doom loop in our cities isn’t interrupted.

@marcoarment that nutrition tracking is very nifty, if it works. Tracking your eating is super hard, I would love to just be able to point my phone at my plate and tell AI to track the macros and calories.

Gte,
@Gte@mastodon.social avatar

@marcoarment They should’ve shot it on iPhone.

@marcoarment Is an introduction video with no subtitles on brand for a device with no screen?

Chuck_ORourke,
@Chuck_ORourke@mastodon.social avatar

@marcoarment I thought over the last few years it was realized we want to do very little voice interaction with our devices?

Video starts with a feeling of two hostages trotted out against their will.

mrkn,
@mrkn@mastodon.social avatar

@marcoarment I just think it’s weird that it’s supposedly an exciting announcement, but the look on their faces is that of parents breaking the news to their kid that the family pet died.

@marcoarment Imran’s thoughtful tone played okay for a marketing TED talk, but does not make me enthusiastic in a product release video.

There’s a lot of clever ideas here, but so much of it could be obsoleted by Siri… not being… shit.

@caseyliss @marcoarment That didn't happen in the last 12 years though

@marcoarment I wonder how much of that is just Imran Chaudhri's personality. He is always that way. Him and Bethany Bongiorno are very smart, but I have never really been wowed by what they have put out. The TED talk Imran did confused me the most. I couldn't understand how they would look at that and think anyone would be excited in a "marketing" type of way.

jackwellborn,

@marcoarment Real “oh shit, we can’t pull off/figure out the thing we thought we were going to do so what can we do to make the half-baked thing we can pull off marketable” vibes.

@marcoarment It's also inaccurate. This is wrong. The April 8th, 2024 eclipse will be best visible from North America. The next total eclipse in Australia isn't until 2028.

@marcoarment they also referenced 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY. Perhaps HAL might not be the best image for an AI-driven product?
