Pet peeve: “podcasts” that offer no RSS feed and don’t show up in the major podcast directories. Folks, if the show is only available via a closed, proprietary platform, IT’S NOT A PODCAST.

Staring down the international travel booking barrel today. Current grappling with the question of whether, given a 3 ½ hour connection window, I’m willing to accept a connection that has me transfer from IAD to DCA, given there is train service between the two that takes 1 ½ hours to navigate (including walking time). Is two hours enough time to deplane, clear customs, and get through DCA TSA? Seems dicey, even with Global Entry.

jarango,
@jarango@mastodon.social avatar

@Meyerweb FWIW, I wouldn't risk such a tight connection.

Inconsistent product terminology leads to “ontological debt,” negatively affecting UX — but you can pay it down. https://jarango.com/2024/03/03/how-to-get-out-of-ontlogical-debt/

Just finished reading Open Space Technology: A User's Guide, by Harrison Owen.
Notes from my reMarkable: https://notes.nicolevanderhoeven.com/assets/reMarkable+-+Open+Space+Technology.pdf

I want to get better at facilitation, so I made these precommitments:

jarango,
@jarango@mastodon.social avatar

@nicole I'm curious about how (if) you integrate your reMarkable notes with Obsidian. Have you shared that anywhere?

jarango,
@jarango@mastodon.social avatar

@nicole I'd love to see the workflow. Are you sending the PDFs manually?

I use Notability on the iPad, mostly because it saves PDFs for individual notes and syncs them automatically with Dropbox. My handwritten notes land in my DEVONthink inbox automatically; from there I add them to Obsidian as needed.

jarango,
@jarango@mastodon.social avatar

@nicole I believe you can implement similar workflows with open eInk note-taking devices, such as Boox and Supernote. I understand reMarkable is more constrained.

jarango,
@jarango@mastodon.social avatar

@nicole that’s good to know. I much prefer reMarkable’s hardware. Does that void your warranty?

"Note" is an overloaded word: we use it to describe different things — stickies, shopping lists, mind maps, etc. — that serve different purposes. Knowing why you're taking notes helps you think better.

My iPad's battery seems to be on its last legs. I'm wondering if it’s worthwhile to have it replaced now, or just wait a couple of months in case new iPad Pros are coming.

jarango,
@jarango@mastodon.social avatar

@Rycaut it's out of coverage. But the battery replacement isn't that expensive.

jarango,
@jarango@mastodon.social avatar

@Rycaut that's a good suggestion. My iPad Pro’s due for an upgrade — it's the 2018 model. But it still has useful life left.

So really what you’re saying is it costs $5/year. The $29.99 is just made up.

By the way, you can read my blog for a special offer of $0 per year instead of the usual $10k annual subscription. Special offer, only available forever.

jarango,
@jarango@mastodon.social avatar

@nicole @apolaine +1 on Readwise. It's one of the subscriptions I most value.

@Chris yes! That’s another pet peeve. Fortunately, bigcos haven’t been able to co-opt the open podcasting ecosystem (yet.)

The Humane Ai Pin introduction video is… bizarre. https://hu.ma.ne/

Super low-energy, low production value, and the first few minutes are a list of shortcomings and what it doesn't do before they tell us anything positive or demonstrate any features.

Are they trying to succeed? This vibe almost feels like they ran out of steam and are hoping to be acquired so they don't need to go through with it.

jarango,
@jarango@mastodon.social avatar

@marcoarment they also referenced 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY. Perhaps HAL might not be the best image for an AI-driven product?

I was interviewed by @jarango for his #Podcast #TheInformedLife about #Emacs and #Orgmode: https://theinformed.life/2023/10/22/episode-125-karl-voit/

He also includes a full transcript along the shownotes. 👍

Listen in, it was much fun for me, talking about #PIM and how Emacs is supporting here.

For my German followers: on Nov. 10, https://focusonlinux.podigee.io/episodes will feature a German episode on Emacs with me and others.

You'll find all details on https://karl-voit.at/clippings/

I've had folks ask about my process for annotating books. So I'm gonna try something new (for me): this Saturday (10/7) at 9 AM PT, I'll livestream myself using Obsidian to process my notes from Peter Attia's "Outlive."

I'll post the link here over the next few days, but my YouTube channel is at https://www.youtube.com/@jarango — Hope to see you there!

Controversial take: the old 4:3 TV aspect ratio is a better fit for mobile devices, where people often watch videos holding the device in portrait orientation.

jarango,
@jarango@mastodon.social avatar

@Chris you’re right about the current form factor being a downside. These devices are too thick when folded.
