🗺️ Is there an app that keeps track of where you’ve walked on a map, so you can seek out streets you haven’t been down yet? Sort of a gamification of exploring one’s neighborhood (or someone else’s while traveling).

EDIT: Looks like https://citystrides.com/ is exactly what I was asking for. Also, Personal Heatmap in Strava subscription may work too. Thanks, everyone!

EDIT 2: Also https://wandrer.earth/

The Swift API guidelines are really good. They’re worth reading even if you’re not interested in Swift just to see an example of how to communicate this kind of information well. https://www.swift.org/documentation/api-design-guidelines/

For years, Affinity's users have been voting with their wallets, choosing perpetual licenses over Adobe's subscription-based suite. We were buying more than access to software; we were buying autonomy and the promise of ownership.

But now, with Canva's acquisition, it feels as though that promise is in jeopardy.

“Now that generative AI has dropped the cost of producing bullshit to near zero, we see clearly the future of the internet: a garbage dump. Google search? They often lead with fake AI-generated images amid the real things. Post on Twitter? Get replies from bots selling porn. But that’s just the obvious stuff. Look closely at the replies to any trending tweet and you’ll find dozens of AI-written summaries in response.”

@FrankPasquale As a parent, what is happening with children’s content is particularly horrifying. The dross spills out from YouTube onto music streaming services as well. There are specific “artists” that are forbidden in our household because they have ominous fucking generative AI lyrics like “I pick up the garbage through the day / Can you guess where it all goes / Without a trace / Haha! That’s a mystery I will leave you to solve!”

Absolutely wild to see the threads of social antipathy coalescing in the anti- column:

  • The seething hatred of Apple, which dates to computing antiquity.

  • The malaise and disdain reserved for all things emanating from Silicon Valley, generally.

  • An inability to imagine a future, or to imagine that change will be positive in any way.

  • An attachment to the status quo of computing at the point where it gave the opinion-holder their greatest sense of power

khad,
@khad@mastodon.social avatar

@danilo As a parent, I’m concerned about the already high screen usage for kids. As someone who walks, runs, and motorcycles, I’m concerned about being endangered by people oblivious to reality more than I already am by people with their faces in their phones.

Will I ever get such a device in the future? Very likely.

Do I still have enormous reservations? For sure.

I have a scene named “I’m Still Up” which resets a few lights that get turned off if I’m up past normal bedtime hours.

Saying, “Siri, I’m still up,” has worked flawlessly for over a year.

Today, I said it and Siri responded, “It’s alright.” I tried again, Siri responded, “It’s all good.”

khad,
@khad@mastodon.social avatar

@simonwood @LoneLocust Not sure it will make any difference because Siri gonna Siri, but we have several scenes where we omit “I’m” or “We’re” from the actually scene name, and they seem to work reliably.

For example, scene is “Taking the Car” to open the garage door for a set amount of time before closing it. Both “I’m taking the car” and “we’re taking the car” work with Siri.

The Humane Ai Pin introduction video is… bizarre. https://hu.ma.ne/

Super low-energy, low production value, and the first few minutes are a list of shortcomings and what it doesn't do before they tell us anything positive or demonstrate any features.

Are they trying to succeed? This vibe almost feels like they ran out of steam and are hoping to be acquired so they don't need to go through with it.

My brother texted me “what smart dimmer should I get?”

Little did he know he kicked off a multi-hour chat about Matter, Thread, LAN control, Nest, Google Home, Zigbee, hubs, border routers, controllers, HomeKit, IKEA TRÅDFRI, and XKCD 927.

https://m.xkcd.com/927/

The whole industry has screwed this every chance they’ve had, and Matter—the most promising “solution”—is still a huge disappointment.

@cassidy Speaking from personal experience and that of a lot of folks in the community, Lutron Caseta and be done.

khad,
@khad@mastodon.social avatar

@cassidy I understand price sensitivity, but they are bulletproof. Even the next most reliable devices I have have needed a tiny bit of troubleshooting at least once. Caseta is as reliable wirelessly as people (very reasonably) expect a wired light switch to be. I couldn’t bring myself to recommend anything else to a friend. 😄 Looking forward to Matter/Thread, but for now I agree the market is just too immature.

It's only a single example, but I find it indicative of the results I get using https://kagi.com as my primary .

Out of 4 engines (, , , and ), only Kagi gave me a result that was a review of someone actually using a microphone with a jogging stroller – and it was the top result. The others are basically just a jumble of unrelated microphone and reviews.

Got my family subscription, Kagi. Let's go!

Screenshot of DuckDuckGo search results for “microphone for jogging stroller”. The top results are “Best Running Strollers of 2023” from Runner’s World, images, and “7 Best Jogging Strollers of 2023” from Good Housekeeping.
Screenshot of Google search results for “microphone for jogging stroller”. The top results are “The 3 Best USB Microphones of 2023” from The New York Times (Wirecutter), a bunch of questions”People also ask” about microphones being worth it, and Kidrunner (a hands-free jogging stroller that honestly does look pretty cool but only if you run on flat, perfectly maintained sidewalks, which is not my reality).
Screenshot of Bing search results for “microphone for jogging stroller”. The top results are “Best Running Strollers of 2023” from Runner’s World and a bunch of random info pulled from … maybe that page? It’s unclear. Way at the bottom and continuing “below the fold”, there is the beginning of an “Explore Further” list of more links to “best jogging stroller” listicles.

    PCalc for iOS is 15 years old today, which does not seem possible. As the Mac version is just over 30 years old, that also means at some point very very soon, the iOS version will have been around for more than half of PCalc's entire existence.

    If you bought it on day one, I hope you have appreciated the one and a half decades of free updates, and I shall direct you to the tip jar 😉

    The About screen for PCalc 1.0.2, which is a lot less exciting that today’s.
    The settings section, which isn’t actually very different, aside from the retro iOS theme.
    The vertical layout for PCalc 1.0 for iOS, with a very different button layout.
