Mastodon periods of activity posting really come and go, and right now it feels like we're mostly in a lull. Outside of the handful of regular accounts I can count on, it feels sleepy around here.
@Zeb_Larson I felt like there was a major drop off last year around the winter holidays.
It’s a bit different this year with social media platform competition, so maybe not applicable, but I got the sense that without an algorithm generating engagement people just got busy doing other stuff - on or offline.
@Chanders And the absence of an algorithm means that if your personal network drops off, you don't have a whole lot of recourse. Your local timeline to an extent, but that's kind of it (and I wonder how much people actually use that). I like it here, but my interest really is sustained by 15 or 20 people.
@Chanders Right. I suspect that communities like infosec are more consistently active, but those aren't my communities and even as a software engineer I just don't have much in common with them.
@inquiline@Zeb_Larson it’s funny that this is literally the exact problem we ran into in 2005 with the NYC indymedia open publishing newswire. We tried to solve it by designing a … kind of algorithm😂
@misc@Chanders It's definitely quieter. My best consolation is that things are also quiet on Bluesky: large accounts there are more active and those convos can be fun, but most of my posting is straight into the wind.
@Zeb_Larson@Chanders I’m newer to Bluesky so I have less of a standard of comparison, but my experience there is that the TL is pretty lively and has a lot of good stuff, but yeah, almost anything I post is straight into the wind. Whereas I still have nice interactions on my posts here, it’s just that the TL is slower.
