@karawswanson thanks so much! I hadn’t heard about it. I’ll queue it up.

goslow53,

@markwyner @haverholm it’s because of this we have stop and go traffic rather than traffic circles, that actually keep traffic moving!

@markwyner
And folks have been ignoring them ever since.

@markwyner
wikipedia tells the story of the invention slightly diffently > https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traffic_light#History

revolt3d,

@markwyner all this man accomplished with no where near the opportunities I had. Amazing.

@markwyner ah, so now we know who to blame…😁🙄

maureenk,

@markwyner Wow! Never think about things like traffic lights being invented... but of course! Great reminder of the unsung infrastructure heroes!

@disky00 yeah. It’s colorized, which gives it an interesting feel. I loved it right away.

This brings back memories of a painted yellow stop light red and green lights with stop and go arms.

@markwyner What the wikipedia entry says is, he invented the modern standard traffic light with a middle, "warning" step between red and green — and this was patented 1923.

In 1912 Morgan invented a "smoke hood" that would be developed into the WW1 gas masks. Using his own invention as protection, he led a rescue to save construction workers from a tunnel collapse. 👈 That's where the year 1916 comes in.

@markwyner he also invented the gas mask!
