20s. Some kind of anarchist :anarchism:. Technically a UI/UX designer.

I make weird videos about politics in video games sometimes and put them on PeerTube, but not often. Hobbies include reverse engineering screenshots and inspecting elements.

Profile picture by @paraplyene over on the birdsite. Header is a drawing I made of a background from The Longest Journey, which is a good game, you should play it if you like point and click adventure games.

Will sometimes post or boost lewd stuff.

Does anyone know if there's gonna be aurora stuff going on tonight as well? I missed it completely and I read it might happen tonight, but mostly in American articles which are a lot of timezones away ๐Ÿ˜…

I'm asking cause I'm planning on driving outside of the city to hopefully actually see it, but I'm also kinda terrified of sitting alone in the dark in the middle of nowhere and if there's no chance of it happening I'd rather not go lol

One of the silliest things about 90s Star Trek to me is the all-touchscreen UI of everything.

I can't imagine driving a car with a touchscreen, let alone piloting a giant spaceship. Or like, Jake Sisko does serious writing work on a PADD and doing so much typing without a physical keyboard sounds so painful ๐Ÿ˜ญ

4 months to go until September 2024 and I have a feeling we'll just keep diverging away from the Good Star Trek Future ๐Ÿ˜”

I was just thinking about this service I used to use, couple years ago. Peek, from UserTesting.

Basically a free, 5 minute video of someone using your site. It was a lot of fun!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MKcBahA-i4

"a bunch of [...] Twitter usernames that are not controlled by people that are just robots that are programmed to release information related to all these different things and that's really interesting, it's kind of cool [...]"

hazelnot,
@hazelnot@sunbeam.city avatar

@stefan ...huh

How is this free? Like, it sounds incredibly useful and they'd have to compensate someone to test all those websites, right? Cause if they aren't paying the people doing it it just sounds exploitative as hell? ๐Ÿ’€

Funny how none of the articles talking about the cybersecurity risks on electric car chargers mention how none of this would've been an issue if the chargers ran more like gas pumps than data collecting points for one of the 212515 companies you have to download the app of and enter your personal details into ๐Ÿ’€

I think most people are writing the rabbit r1 by Teenage Engineering as "another AI no one asked for" that might be true... HOWEVER LAM "Large Action Model" sounds interesting. An assistant to be able to use apps, not use APIs... literally use the apps by clicking buttons & such. But, the reason it sounds interesting is that fleeting hope it might, at long last, help me to avoid the little UI bugs/failings that drive me nuts in many apps.

Which begs the question: why not just fix the UIs? 1/

hazelnot,
@hazelnot@sunbeam.city avatar

@john @Cefr @futurebird well they're lying about it and keep claiming it's not just an Android app and that the "real OS" runs in the cloud so...

But yeah, of course anything "AI"-related is gonna be a scam, so it's to be expected

What's the cheapest mini-PC I could use as a media PC (i.e. slap Linux on it and hook it up to the TV permanently)? I have this ASUS stick PC thing but it's running on an old Atom CPU so it's not fast enough to be able to properly handle HD video decoding

I looked it up online and seems like the cheapest ones are like, 300โ‚ฌ? Which isn't a lot-a lot but it's still kind of a lot for me ๐Ÿ’€

hazelnot,
@hazelnot@sunbeam.city avatar

@anthropy huh interesting

The "mini" part isn't really that relevant, I currently use a laptop. It can even be bigger than that, I just said "mini" cause those tend to be smaller, cheaper and weaker than regular PCs haha

I would prefer it to be an actual PC though, not an Android device ๐Ÿ˜…

I will look into the one you sent me though, see if they're available here in Romania and for how much, and if they're actually fast enough for what I need

...huh I just realized that Deus Ex: Human Revolution is set in 2027

I never realised how near-future it was, even when it came out it was, what, 15, 16 years into the future

Always assumed it was decades and never really checked until my current playthrough (was gonna finally play the first one but health issues moment means it's probably for the better to play stuff in bed on the Deck and not on the chair at the desktop)

Welp, the Romanian OSM community (or at least some very vocal parts of it) seem to either not care of pretending not to care about the recent Telegram neo-nazi shit (i.e. the Telegram team putting neo-nazi dog whistles in their latest announcement post: https://plush.city/@PsyChuan/112336464469767051 )

Apparently a really big chunk of the OSM community worldwide uses Telegram, unfortunately so... I'm not sure what's to do in this case.

I posted about it on the OSM Matrix as well, and someone suggested I bring this up on the main OSM Telegram, though I've never been there and I'm not sure what kind of reception it will get there considering on the Romanian group I already got some pretty big pushback (including one guy using everything in the far-right playbook to try to discredit me, derail the conversation and misrepresent my point)

Oof I just discovered the concept of dead fedi instances' domains being taken over for nefarious purposes

I clicked on an artalley dot social link and it popped up with one of those "your device is at risk" scareware pages trying to get me to install an apk on my phone ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

hazelnot,

@rdnielsen @metin @pluralistic there's two definitions of the term "PC". The generic one, which idk when those first appeared, and the IBM PC compatible definition, which is also sometimes used

The Vatican has just reaffirmed its hostility toward so-called "gender ideology." I recently wrote in the magazine of the pope's Jesuit order that this posture is a dangerous failure of imagination: https://www.americamagazine.org/faith/2023/11/16/gender-ideology-catholic-246515

@ntnsndr damn surprised they'd accept an article like this in a publication that's indirectly owned by the Vatican

hazelnot,

@ntnsndr I mean it's the Catholic Church, isn't the whole point of it to be a monolith under the absolute control of the Pope?

The โ€œgreatโ€ thing about England is that when these articles come out and you google the person who wrote them itโ€™s not something boring like โ€œtheir dad is a trust fund managerโ€ itโ€™s โ€œtheir dad is a baron, their grandfather edited the newspaper this appears in, and their family founded the private Bank of Englandโ€

Oof I switched over to Gnome for a bit (like, a minute or two) and then back to KDE and going back to KDE felt like travelling back in time in a bad way, in terms of how the UI is designed ๐Ÿ˜”

KDE has much, much better UX, but Gnome is just so pretty ๐Ÿ˜ญ

hazelnot,
@hazelnot@sunbeam.city avatar

@simon_brooke it works if you install a bunch of extensions to make it usable, cause by default you don't even know what apps you have running without opening the overview

I've also had some really bad encounters with Gnome devs, bad enough to confirm my theory that they literally don't give a shit about anyone other than themselves and are treating the project like an avant-garde art project instead of actually having a UX that functions

hazelnot,
@hazelnot@sunbeam.city avatar

@simon_brooke I can't deal with anything without a permanently present taskbar/dock, and I don't like Gnome's full screen launcher/search either, it's like they took the worst part of Windows 8 and are still using it to this day (and macOS is guilty of this too)
