Correct me if I’m wrong here, but isn’t the whole point of republicanism to double-down on representative government in order to create a barrier between the swayable masses and political power? Like, isn’t the name “Republican” synonymous with “not populist?” Meaning that having a Republican Party beholden to a dumpster fire “because he’s popular with the base” is incompatible with the concept of republicanism itself…

@FrChazzz the people who believe in republicanism, debate its contours and boundaries, are maybe influential in the American conservative movement, but they’ve never been the majority. The populists in vogue now, well, as St Paul put it, “Their god is their own stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their minds are set on earthly things.”
