I’m back to complain about trying to get these photo files off my iPhone. My options look like either transferring over a wired lightning connection, where 10gb is estimated to take 6-12 HOURS or upload them all to iCloud, then download them off of iCloud from a browser.

Not available? A simple transfer from its built in file manager to my computer over Bluetooth. The mind boggles.

Looks like polymaths might be having some federation issues today. I’m sure @amin is on the case. Until then, you can find me here, again.

FrChazzz, to Christianity

The other day I saw this in a post: “The only way to know the truth is to read and learn the Bible” and I’ve been sitting with it. Here’s the thing: Jesus tells us that HE is the truth. So is the original post saying that the Bible leads to Jesus and therefore truth? Or are we trying to say that the words themselves are the truth? Because if it’s the latter, that’s getting close to idol territory…

spaceraser,
@spaceraser@fosstodon.org avatar

@FrChazzz very very similar question to where we locate The Word of God, or the Logos. St John locates it with the person of Christ, many printed volumes of the Christian Bible put it on the cover. Is it Christ, The Scripture, that book right there? What holds the authority of the Logos over the believer, the living person of Christ or the letters printed on that page?

spaceraser,
@spaceraser@fosstodon.org avatar

@FrChazzz one of my favorite authors, Chris Green, identified God’s sovereignty with His ability to surprise us, to be more and bigger than our expectations. He also identified a certain Biblicism (ranging towards idolatrous regard for the printed words of scripture) with the desire to possess, or even begin to comprehend the totality of the divine person. Obviously, the author (and I) would caution against that.

spaceraser,
@spaceraser@fosstodon.org avatar

@FrChazzz I was challenged by a friend to find anywhere in the scripture where the writings and teachings of the law, the prophets, or the apostles refer to themselves as “The Word of God”, and that was a helpful exercise. It’s unhelpful, our legacy of anti-intellectualism in American Christianity, which makes it difficult to insist on reading the scripture carefully and interrogating, “what does the scripture says about it’s own authority?”

spaceraser,
@spaceraser@fosstodon.org avatar

@FrChazzz so much of deconstruction can feel like walking away from scripture as an authority in our lives into a wild and unordered space out in the world, when for me it was just detangling Scripture from what our heritage of sweaty, revival tent Biblicism says about scripture. In many ways, they were just wrong. Can’t blame them, though, most of them (talking about my own family here) had no connection to The Tradition, they were basically starting from scratch.

Business idea: restaurant for neurodivergent people. Food that’s good without trying to be overly fancy, and where you could ask for any ingredient to be left out, no questions asked. And the side salad would never, ever touch the warm food.

Correct me if I’m wrong here, but isn’t the whole point of republicanism to double-down on representative government in order to create a barrier between the swayable masses and political power? Like, isn’t the name “Republican” synonymous with “not populist?” Meaning that having a Republican Party beholden to a dumpster fire “because he’s popular with the base” is incompatible with the concept of republicanism itself…

spaceraser,
@spaceraser@fosstodon.org avatar

@FrChazzz the people who believe in republicanism, debate its contours and boundaries, are maybe influential in the American conservative movement, but they’ve never been the majority. The populists in vogue now, well, as St Paul put it, “Their god is their own stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their minds are set on earthly things.”

Always pay attention to the voices left out of a piece of writing, or relegated to the end. AP put out more than a thousand words on self checkout expanding at grocery stores, leaves less than a hundred on how it affects the workers it's supposed to either augment or replace. No surprise, the worker they interviewed thought having to supervise the self checkout was less safe for them, especially now that consumers are angrier than they used to be.

https://apnews.com/article/selfcheckout-theft-labor-walmart-target-1a8a6da0291651815557316964d7f8f9?utm_source=pocket-newtab-en-us

spaceraser,
@spaceraser@fosstodon.org avatar

They also left out how Kroger's eye-in-the-sky "AI" cameras at checkout were also rolled out with security gates at the entrances that don't let you leave by the same door you entered. Add security guards, etc, and I don't even want to shop there anymore. Like, it wasn't my idea for you to cut your cashiers and make me check my own bagels, why are you treating me like a potential thief every time I come in there? For now, at least, Target doesn't do that.

So, I really liked running @opensuse on my MacBook Pro, but the thing needs a new battery to really be my mobile rig and this thing was made in the era where batteries were GLUED IN WITH PERMANENT GLUE by the manufacturer so I’m not keen on that process. Downloading macOS back on it in case I need a proprietary workstation for anything in the future. I always seem to need one once or twice a year….

spaceraser,
@spaceraser@fosstodon.org avatar

I think I will eventually swap the battery, though. The whole thing is simply in too good of shape to not squeeze another couple years out of it.
