Please use another platform. I do not want to give these people money. https://substack.com/@hamish/note/c-45811343

@ernie
I'll also "note" that this reply comes via their proprietary short messaging/social service that was built as s moat to keep writers stuck there.

If Substack is going to insist on profiting from materials I don't want to support, at least make it possible to pay the creator more money in exchange for not giving them a cut.

Call it the pro bono fee. I should have the right to support the creator but not the service.

@ernie idk... this 'rant into the void then retreat to yet-another-corporate-owned-and-operated-platform since the current one is shitty' is getting pretty old, pretty fast. it truly takes up far too much brain bandwidth imo.

@tothedaring that second part is an addition you made, and it's not part of my pitch.

All things equal I'd rather everyone be on FOSS tools

@ernie oh right, no. i was referring to the mass move from twitter and medium to substack and how there will inevitably be yet another similar move in the near future.

and yeah, likewise. idk how we get there tho. bizarre to me how you can show someone something that is nearly as frictionless a solution as a substack and they'll opt for the substack solution instead.

@tothedaring People don’t want to have to think about sausage.

I almost feel like if we had a Docker-like solution that was as easy to put together as a box of Legos and required no code knowledge that would be the play.

@ernie I am confused, so I'm asking. Do you mean there are some creators/publishers on Substack you disagree with? That's why you don't want to support Substack? Or do you mean something else? Thanks.

ernie,
@ernie@writing.exchange avatar

@johannarothman Substack is choosing to platform Nazis and profit off of them. I'm just making the case that if this is really about the free exchange of ideas as they say, they should give people the ability to support creators without giving the platform a cut.
