I still think modern social media shifting the focus from topics to people wasn't a great move. The way forums worked was that you opted into the things you're interested in and got a very low chance of seeing topics you disliked. And even if you did, not opening the thread was a surefire way to get rid of it from your view.

Now you subscribe to people who will post about anything. You carefully have to consider if the things-I-like to things-I-dislike ratio works for you, but unless you're extremely strict you will get topics in your timeline you may hate. Getting rid of unwanted content takes substantial amount of discipline in who you follow and usage of mutes and word filters. The latter of which is, quite frankly, a joke. And I think this is the root for a lot of "discourses" nowadays.
