Rarely do you get to see the roots of post boxes like these ones waiting to be re-potted.

@velobetty Looks like the Pep Boys: Manny, Moe and Jack

@velobetty are people allowed to own them?

I Feel like if I was rich, I'd want a postbox, but I wouldn't want anyone using it.

velobetty,
@velobetty@toot.bike avatar

@lewiscowles1986 I have the feeling they're property of the monarch or something maybe but it'd be cool!

So the legend is true that in England stuff near trees grows roots too. Must be those druid vibes flowing through nature.

@velobetty

The front post box has EIIR on it, will this go back in or will it be replaced with CIIIR ?

RPBook,
@RPBook@historians.social avatar

@zleap @velobetty they don't necessarily get replaced when the monarch changes. There are some in use today with GR crests.

@zleap @velobetty eg this one in Chesterfield.

@velobetty Wow, the two on the outsides are in great condition for going back to the reign of King George (I assume VI - but given the different fonts, maybe one of them is V and one VI). I wonder when this photo was taken.

nic,
@nic@toot.wales avatar

@callisto there are still plenty of George V and VI postboxes in active service, and Victorian ones aren’t that rare (there’s one in the next village to us) although they’re usually built into walls rather than free-standing pillar boxes like these.

@localzuk@ohai.social avatar

@callisto @velobetty that seems to be at least one area where Royal Mail has done a good job. They maintain part boxes quite well.

There's a GR cipher (1910-1936) one near where I work (the work building was built around 1920) and it is in great shape. It gets painted yearly, with it being stripped down before repainting every so often as well.
