Bikes are being stolen at work seemingly multiple times a week now, despite being locked up with U-locks. The latest theft involved a bike locked with both a U-lock and a cable lock.

I'm starting to think the only protection is having a really shitty bike.

With regards to bike theft, someone always suggests an airtag, but one of the students at work had an airtag hidden in his bike recently and it was stolen. He tracked it off campus and to a house, but the bike was nowhere to be seen outside and police didn't do anything about it

@MLE_online Did the airtag had the speaker removed? If not, it will make a noise when moved.

There should be a lock that warns the user when it's opened (and not just when it's moved), to have 2 or 3 of them and have enough early warning to go and prevent the theft.

@starsider I doubt it, but it was hidden inside the bicycle, whatever that means

@MLE_online It means they can find it to remove it. That noise was added to prevent stalking, but it makes it less useful for theft situations.

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@starsider well, this one wasnt removed because the bike owner tracked its movement

@MLE_online we don't really want the cops busting down doors on people's say-so (they need a warrant!).

But I would think that the airtag might be sufficient to at least have a chance at getting warrant. And also, cops usually don't have a problem with banging on doors and strongly implying that they should be allowed in. Or... Getting totally spurious warrants and the wrong address and shooting dogs.

Dislike of paperwork is the only shield against creeping authoritarianism.

@The_Turtle_Moves Yeah for sure. But the cops didn't do anything at all. Surely there's a reasonable middle ground between not lifting a finger and gestapo tactics

The_Turtle_Moves,
@The_Turtle_Moves@mastodon.online avatar

@MLE_online yeah, but it probably involves paperwork 😭

MLE_online,

@The_Turtle_Moves yeah, and they only want to exert authority and force

    @acdha As much as cops love to complain these days that their hands are tied by liberals, they never did give a shit about helping most people, especially when it's something they don't consider important, like a stolen bike

    @MLE_online nice bikes go inside. shitty bikes used to be able to be outside at night, but not anymore. there's not much an angle grinder or dremel can't cut.

    @pr06lefs This only works if you're at home or at your own office though

    @MLE_online how did they break the u-locks?

    MLE_online,
    @MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

    @crashglasshouses No idea. They take the locks with them, so there's no evidence left behind.

    @MLE_online grr, death penalty for bicycle thieves!

    @crashglasshouses the only case in which I am pro death penalty

    h2onolan,

    @MLE_online ive seen a few clips lately of thieves just rolling up to bike racks in broad daylight with cordless anglegrinders and pillaging. bystanders mouths agape in disbelief.

    @h2onolan I don't think I would be able to just stand there and watch

    @MLE_online i just noticed there's a very fancy e-bike outside the lab locked with only a U-lock and my first thought was "i could steal that."

    @MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

    @rose_alibi I saw a very fancy e-bike on campus last month secured with a note that said "do not touch or alarm will sound." I'm not sure how much a deterrent that's going to be

    @MLE_online @rose_alibi There is a couple with ebikes that are often at a brewery we frequent. We always sit on the small patio out back along an alley. They always lock their bikes to the metal gate where you enter the patio and they have loud annoying alarm sounds triggered by motion. Those annoying alarms sound half a dozen times everytime we're there lol. We have kids and they park them right by the entrance and it's a small patio area. So the bikes and or the gate get bumped by a kid or someone else pretty frequently. But they never come out to check on them so it would probably not prevent much.

    @MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

    @kelbot @rose_alibi i guess there's no reason to think bike alarms would end up treated any differently than car alarms

    @MLE_online Knew someone who tried that - he used the most bent, rusted, broken bike he could find to get around Palo Alto. It was stolen.
