For the next several weeks (and months?) I'm evaluating at least a dozen open source and commercial apps.

Now, I'm honestly not saying this because I work at @thunderbird, but the new is a buggy mess within the first 5 minutes of use. I'm quite surprised that "Switch to New Outlook" toggle is even there.

My Gmail account requested re-authorization twice, and switching off Focused Inbox completely zapped everything from the message pane, and I can't get it back.

hperrin,

@killyourfm @thunderbird Hey Jason, would you mind if I asked you to try out my email service when it's available later this month? It would be awesome to have such a knowledgeable perspective on it. You can read about it here: https://port87.com/

It's not completely open source, but it's built with the two open source projects I maintain, Svelte Material UI and Nymph.js. It's also built with SvelteKit, so I'd be interested in what you think of it compared to desktop apps.

MarkJones,

@killyourfm @thunderbird I provide my clients with IMAP mailbox hosting which I don’t very often have to give support for, but when I do, Apple Mail on MacOS is the usual culprit.

quasigod,

@killyourfm @thunderbird I made the mistake of toggling it on my work machine. It eventually stopped launching and I had to reset the app. Not complaining since I chose to test the new version, but surprised it still needs that much work.

It's odd that even though new teams is pretty stable, it asks you if you want to revert every time you open the new version and Outlook doesn't.

@killyourfm @thunderbird When I started at @SUSE in 2017, I tried out every GUI email client in openSUSE's repos. (I'm not a terminal warrior.) CLAWS, Sylpheed, Evolution, Balsa, GNUstep Mail.app, KDE KMail, multiple others.

CLAWS and Evolution survived for a while.

But in the end, I returned to T'bird, and stayed on it for the next 3 years. 🙂 It really is the best.

@lproven @killyourfm @SUSE 💙 Thanks for being part of the Tbird family.

bouncywallaby,

@killyourfm @thunderbird has been brain-dead since inception. That and are in the same basket! 🤣

@killyourfm @thunderbird I miss Inbox... 😑 By far it did the best job of keeping me away from the email inbox with everything done efficiently (of course it had to be killed). The ToDo management flow it encouraged was something else.

And yes, it wasn't for everybody nor did it comply with already hardened workflows. Yet it still worked brilliantly

@pak0st I remember switching the second I was first aware of it, and really enjoyed using it.

Its death was the end of me trying anything new from Google...

@killyourfm Microsoft Outlook… I can’t even. I CANT EVEN.

@killyourfm is the client integrated in @Vivaldi on your bucket list? It's the spiritual successor of Opera's mail client M2 which they stopped maintaining in 2014 or so (and which until recently was my client of choice...). I've tried to get used to TB many times but always found it too heavy to support my preferred "no frills" email https://wildente.vivaldi.net/the-no-frills-email-workflow/

killyourfm,
@killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

@WildEnte @Vivaldi It honestly hasn't been on my radar to try personally. My first impression of it (based on actual screenshots from Vivaldi) was that...well... it quite resembled Thunderbird.

Custom folders, mostly monochrome action icons, no multi-line message preview, tabbed workflow, etc.

I'm not sure how I feel about "a database of all your messages, labels, filters, searches is maintained by Vivaldi..."

@WildEnte @Vivaldi That being said, others have told me it's worth checking out, so I'm adding it my list.

@killyourfm @WildEnte
Vivaldi is definitely worth checking out. 😉

@killyourfm @Vivaldi re "not sure how I feel about 'database of messages ... is maintained by Vivaldi'" - no privacy issue lurking here, this is strictly within the local client.

TB defaults put accounts and folders in the front row, I have to turn on unified inbox. Yes quick filters exist but TB feels like made for filing. Vivaldi is the other way around: unified inbox and filter toggles first. Plus I like the browser integration.

Unsurprisingly TB is much more mature & feature complete (c:=

@WildEnte @Vivaldi Ahh, thanks for putting my mind at ease about the database. For some unknown reason my brain defaulted to "Vivaldi the brand and its offices / servers" rather than "Vivaldi the software."

fleischie28,

@killyourfm Is there a list of apps you will write about?
Also will this be published somewhere more persistent? (Conversely formulated: Will this only be published as toots?)

killyourfm,
@killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

@fleischie28 It's something I'm evaluating to inform a marketing strategy document I'm working on.

But I'm not shy about highlighting the strengths of other applications, and using those insights to make Thunderbird a better product.

The short answer: probably just toots. If I do discuss it more broadly, it'll for sure be on @Linux4Everyone

@thunderbird I WILL give some praise though: I'm a fan of those colored icons on the horizontal ribbon. (Just not a fan of the ribbon itself...)

@killyourfm @thunderbird Yep, a big usability by Apple & Microsoft in recent years is forcing borderless buttons, all the same shape, even monochrome. Colours & shapes help me identify & remember what is where.

There used to be an app to bring shaped buttons back to OS X Mail.app: "CageFighter"
