The Post Office scandal is shocking—but not surprising

The systems failures that led to this miscarriage of justice are all too familiar—and without some remarkable stokes of legal luck they might never have come to light

By me, at Prospect

anxiousmac,

@davidallengreen At no stage does anyone seem to have thought "Hang on, we wouldn't expect this many bent postmasters if we had recruited exclusively from Wormwood Scrubs."

richardcyates,

@davidallengreen the link to the Horizon issues judgement doesn’t seem to be correct on the email I received today. The article is fascinating and thought provoking

@richardcyates

I have just tested it and it works for me.

@davidallengreen This is a great read, thank you.

It's interesting you highlight the weaknesses of the E&W system, but with what should have been a more robust process, in Scotland the same travesties occurred. I haven't seen much written about the Scottish Horizon cases recently except this : https://www.scottishlegal.com/articles/stuart-munro-the-post-office-horizon-scandal

It's not comforting reading.

@jbenjamint

I am a qualified lawyer in England and Wales, and I know enough about Scots law to know that I should not write about Scots law! So although you find it "interesting" I only write about E&W, I have no alternative.

But I would not be surprised by similar horror stories in your jurisdiction.

@davidallengreen What I still want to know is where did all the money go that individuals gave the Post Office to make up in-fact-not-missing shortfalls.

@ProfLouiseL

A good question.

davoloid,

@davidallengreen What galls me is the "come to light" aspect. Private Eye (maybe other organs as well) have been highlighting the problems and then the scandal for almost all this time.

@davoloid

Indeed. But it was the court process that prised the key disclosures out of the Post Office.
