This IEEE Spectrum piece is absolutely unhinged -- and by the same absurd logic, we would have banned BBSs in the 1980s because kids (🙋‍♂️) were using them to find copies of The Anarchist Cookbook.

@bcantrill i like how it leads with "this is a guest post" which doesn't exactly exclude that it was probably boiler plated using the same ai.

@bcantrill I maintain my opinion that the people who are pulling this shell game of a take are the ones who were most at risk of what we actually almost achieved - sensible regulation and investigation into misinformation, and holding accountable corporations for their use of automation at scale.

@amcasari 💯 These absurd fears are used to distract people from the real (pedestrian!) dangers. I expanded on this in my talk debunking AI-based existential risk:

@bcantrill I knew I missed out this year!! Can't wait to watch it.

@bcantrill Me, to the author of the piece: Tell me you don’t understand open source without telling me you don’t understand open source.

bcantrill,
@bcantrill@mastodon.social avatar

@ramsey 💯 And in fact, it looks remarkably like the kind of argument that the SPA made against open source in the 1990s!

@bcantrill This doesn’t really surprise me, coming from the IEEE (of which I’m a dues-paying member). Even as a member, I can’t access IEEE 754 without paying for it. They are very protective of their copyrights and do not allow public distribution in any form.

It’s difficult to comprehend an “open” standard that everyone must use for floating point math in software/hardware being locked up behind paywalls.

@ramsey @bcantrill First paragraph of TFA: “The views expressed here are solely those of the author [David Evan Harris] and do not represent positions of IEEE Spectrum or the .”

So go bother Mr. Harris: https://haas.berkeley.edu/faculty/harris-david/

@bcantrill I haven't seen many others make the same conclusion and I thought I was going a little crazy
