When you choose to use an #ML#LLM foundation model, you accept the risk management decisions made by the vendor without your input. Wonder what they are? Read this #MLsec paper from #IEEE computer.
From May 17 to May 20 2024 the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in collaboration with People Centered Internet (PCI) is holding three events that will celebrate three 'Milestones' in the development of the Internet. The first Milestone celebrates the 50th anniversary of publication of an IEEE technical paper describing TCP, a
"In the mid-1960s, Robert Kahn began thinking about how computers with different operating systems could talk to each other across a network.
[...]
It is for this work on packet communication technologies—as part of the project that became the ARPANET and in the foundations of the Internet—that Kahn is being awarded the 2024 IEEE Medal of Honor."
Good morning and happy Thursday to all of you here within the #Fediverse
It's a new day, so let's discuss what the day ahead has in store for each of us.
It's the usual work stuff here with a meeting at 12pm EST today. After that, I'll be playing Horizon Forbidden West as it releases in 3 1/2 hours from now and I'm so excited!
@cliffwade Good morning Cliff! The whole family is on their way to Atlanta for #IEEE SoutheastCon. 6 hours on the bus, not too bad. Taking about 30 students with us for the various competitions. I’ll be judging on the software competition. Should be fun, seeing old friends.
I don't like the #OpenAccess publishing contract from the 𝘑𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘕𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘴 (published by the Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences and the #IEEE Communications Society). But I do like the fact that the journal made it OA. That helps authors decide whether to submit work there, and supports easier comparison to other contracts. All journals should make their publishing contracts OA. https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/stamp/stamp.jsp?tp=&arnumber=10387284
This IEEE Spectrum piece is absolutely unhinged -- and by the same absurd logic, we would have banned BBSs in the 1980s because kids (🙋♂️) were using them to find copies of The Anarchist Cookbook.
@ramsey@bcantrill First paragraph of TFA: “The views expressed here are solely those of the author [David Evan Harris] and do not represent positions of IEEE Spectrum or the #IEEE.”
Deeply frustrating email from #IEEE linking to a page that talks big about how they're helping people with disabilities who aren't engineers, and completely fails to address the ways people with disabilities are actively excluded from participating as engineers.
The Accessibility Statement covers ONLY web content, and their Event guidance boils down to safety from harassment.
"This year, Python doesn’t just remain No. 1 in our general “Spectrum” ranking—which is weighted to reflect the interests of the typical IEEE member—but it widens its lead."
The South Australia Section of the IEEE Computer Society is running an Introduction to Programming and Sensors with Raspberry Pico Workshop on the 11th of July @ Adelaide University.
"In this workshop, which is aimed at beginners to embedded computing, you’ll learn everything needed to program the Pico using nothing more than your own laptop, a USB cable and a web browser. You will also be able to acquire hands-on experience yourself on how to connect the Pico to buttons, buzzers and create a mini weather station with a display, and discover other ways you can adapt the Pico to anything you might think of!"
Are people in the #ComputerScience community thinking of organized responses to the anti-trans legislation in Florida, Texas and elsewhere in the US? There's the new "bathroom" law in Florida, which will force trans people to use the wrong (and unsafe) restrooms in government buildings, including state universities.
Perhaps @ACM, @ieee_bot and other professional societies should cease hosting conferences in states that have passed anti-trans legislation?
