I just changed the filter in my Flo Mask Pro, which I had changed just before our two days of 200+ AQI. I was out (and masked) for maybe 4-6 hours total.

The filter was visibly darkened, which I've never seen before.

Since moving to the US, I've begun noticing just how cleaner the air really is. Average AQI around where I used to live was about 174, occasionally dropping to the high 60s.

Edit:-
I live in NC, and the AQI here hasn't been 200+, but I can tell that the air has gotten far worse in the last few days. And if someone like me, accustomed to almost daily 170+ AQI levels can feel the difference, I can't imagine how hard it is for the locals here.

I have family in Kolkata, India. Horrific air quality. When I blew my nose, the snot was grey. When I came back to Canada and finally had a nice hot shower (my grandparents' house only had cold water, so we used a kettle of hot water to clean strategic areas), the suds coming off of me were grey... I don't want to know what my lungs look like after a combination of those trips and smoking cigarettes from the age of 16 to 25.

@mattblaze oh, that reminds me of my FFP after a day the floor at a foundry in China I worked at at some point.

Here’s the filter after a few hours of use in 200+ AQI. Original color is the white border visible around the edge (where the filter is pinched in place by the holder).

(Back of the filter wasn't discolored at all.)

alienghic,

@mattblaze that's impressively used.

It reminds me of my HVAC filters after months of use in regular conditions

@alienghic Right?

@mattblaze Living in a coastal valley of the LA Basin and being a CPAP user with a hypoallergenic filter in the machine, that's how my filter looks like (inside air of my home) after 1-2 weeks and our AQI is very often 60 or higher, and frequently above 100. Dirty air kills, causes life-threatening health issues and disables people. That's been proven by science. It's like if you live right next to a freeway, it WILL affect your longevity. @mattblaze now I feel like I need to check the HVAC filter and the cabin filter in my vehicle...

mattblaze,
@mattblaze@federate.social avatar

@emag Yeah, probably not a bad idea

@mattblaze especially since Thursday was my in-office day, and AQI was about 240 both at home and in Greenbelt...

Tell me about the FloMask Pro, is it comfortable, easy to breathe?

mattblaze,
@mattblaze@federate.social avatar

@echanda for my face, it’s terrific. Excellent seal, very easy to breathe through. High initial cost, but I’ve had it over a year and changed only the filters. Straps are starting to get a little worn, but those are replaceable.

@mattblaze @echanda i love mine too, i find it almost...distressingly easy to breathe in. the only downside imo is that i sound a lot more muffled than when i wear a regular n95.

@mattblaze I changed my cpap filter after the smoke. It was visibly discolored beyond normality, indoors, doors/windows closed, electrostatic air filter on the A/C.

davedave,

@mattblaze Reading the whole report includes extimated mortality - multiply those numbers by 20 to account for higher population and population density. https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/2021GH000454#gh2280-sec-0100-title

    @VE2UWY Yeah. Protip: MUCH easier to do that BEFORE you move in.

    I take it you didn't visit out here (CA) when we were having forest fires.

    No filter was used to dim this exposure:

    Camera Model Name : NIKON Z 7
    Exposure Time : 1/160
    F Number : 11.0
    ISO : 64
    Focal Length : 1000.0 mm
    Lens : Nikon 1m f/11 reflex

    AMS,

    @mattblaze Had that happen a few years back with a Spirian mask in the upper midwest. Visibly brown after a 40min bike ride. Air just looked a bit hazy, not apocalyptic. Glad that's not in my lungs.

    22,

    @mattblaze do you keep the mask inside the bag when you’re not wearing it? So the color was purely from your 4-6 hours outdoors and not a few days sitting out indoors? (I ask because I think I read on their site that the filter is “working” even when it’s off your face so keep it in the bag to avoid eating into its 20 or 40 hours lifespan?)

    mattblaze,
    @mattblaze@federate.social avatar

    @22 Mostly stored inside, in a well-filtered room.

    feedmd,

    @mattblaze in China you get black masks from white in about 2-4 hours. Been this way for 15 years.
