Almost five years ago, a prominent tech journalist told his readers to ditch Google Chrome for Firefox. Why? Because Chrome was turning into spyware.

This year, Chrome IS spyware, pure and simple.

The advice is more sound than ever.

@dangillmor Firefox on Android allows you to install extensions. Including top notch ad blockers (I use ublock origin). Fantastic. 10/10.

@dangillmor An underreported aspect of that WaPo story is what happened next - I'm not making this up - Apple ripped off the WaPo video for its next ad campaign:

@markhurst @dangillmor wasn't it Steve Jobs who said "great artists, steal" Apple is just living up to his ideal 😝

Coincidentally, the quote is also likely stolen

As long as you have the time to go through about:config and remove every Google API (Firefox would not exist if not for Google paying Mozilla to include this) and disable all built in spyware (in Windows terminology "telemetry") and every adware "study". And do so before you plug in the network.

Yes, Firefox allows you to disable most , but it has been shown repeatedly to be the browser that transmits the most data on first launch, to prevent you from turning any spyware off before they get your data. Here Firefox fans usually jump in to say that the leaked data isn't something we should care about, but an actual privacy focused browser wouldn't be capable of this, because it wouldn't have any data to transmit.

I switched from Firefox to many years ago, a browser whose user base cares so much about privacy that there was an outcry when they were caught counting the number of users. The company is still careful not to make that mistake again.

@dangillmor
By "careful not to make the same mistake again" I mean every time improves their automatic update process, I see blog posts musing about how to do this without download servers being able to track downloads. Which needs to be prevented client side, not just turned off at the server, because anyone can pretend to do that.

Firefox market share is around 3% (down from around 40% when Mozilla still cared about their users), while market share is a rough guess because doesn't track users and market share trackers can't because shows as Chrome.

Mozilla pretends to care about privacy the same way they pretend to hire developers and their CEO pretends to be worth her salary.

GMacSpark,

@dangillmor If you’re used to the way Chrome looks, try Brave Browser instead. Privacy is their USP. They also have their own search engine and VPN. https://brave.com

@GMacSpark @dangillmor sorry, no crypto bro browser for me, thanks.

GMacSpark,

@villares @dangillmor So which browser do you recommend?

@GMacSpark @dangillmor even with all of Mozilla's failings, Firefox + blocking plug-ins

GMacSpark,

@villares @dangillmor Can Firefox use Chrome plugins? There are a few I depend on.

@GMacSpark @dangillmor I'm afraid not.

dcampbell189,

@dangillmor I’ve always felt Google wasn’t a great idea. Most schools use it. They probably have all my kids’ information.
