Monopolist Spotify is unhappy about monopolist Apple using its monopoly power to "comply" with federal court's feeble pretense of a pro-competition ruling in a way that changes nothing.

I went to Tidal after Spotify partnered with Joe Rogan. There are alternatives, with better quality streaming, and higher pay for artists.

@mizblueprint @dangillmor tidal is the only music service left. Every other one shoves podcasts in your face.

I've been OK with "renting" music for years now. If Tidal goes away, I may have to repossess my vinyl collection from one of the kids. Plus open up the boxes of cassette tapes, CDs, and mixtapes/CDs. I avoid YouTube, cause who has time for all those ads? 🤔 I did burn copies of mp3s from Lime wire and Napster days. I'm sure I have "Kind of Blue" and many others on vinyl, CD, cassette, mp3, and rental. How many times, and how many ways to pay for and play the same music? 🎶

@mizblueprint @dangillmor talk to Google about tidal media downloader.

If they go to shit, take your library with when you go.

I used a third party program to suck all my playlists off of Spotify. Maybe I should archive them all, or download 9k tracks to my computer. 😕

@mizblueprint @WagesOf @dangillmor Agreed. Definitely other options people should look into.

I left Spotify pre-Rogan and tried Tidal but found twice that songs were added unbidden to my playlists (not just recommended based on the playlists, but totally different genres by people I’ve never heard of and didn’t enjoy listening to), and their help desk basically shrugged their shoulders about it.

I went to Deezer instead, which I was quite happy with.

@reay @mizblueprint @dangillmor I was on deezer until they changed the UI and decided they want to become a music based social network. 🤮

@reay@mastodon.social avatar

@WagesOf @mizblueprint @dangillmor Never heard of that. So, a streaming service but with a social network somehow ingrained, or something?

I dunno where they're going with it, but the new UI was bad enough for me to bail. Take what they say and try to make your own sense of it.

@WagesOf @mizblueprint @dangillmor That’s… weird.

Sounds sort of like the old peer to peer sharing format from late nineties till Metallica killed Napster. I recall being able to follow people, see what they share, talk about the music.

@mizblueprint @reay @dangillmor could be, as far as I know their primary change, so far, has been to make their icons look like a dating app and tear out about 20% of their search and discover functions.

I wouldn't be against a companion app with music and chat, like discord w some plug-ins? But to shoe horn that stuff without the ability to opt out in a subscription service? No thanks.

@dangillmor “We need hundreds of millions more dollars to throw at anti-vax conspiracy nuts! We’ve already stolen every penny from the musicians, so our only other option is to break our contractual obligation with Apple!”

@dangillmor Apple doesn’t have a monopoly share of the mobile market. And they cannot be a monopoly over their own private infrastructure anymore than a mall developer is a monopolist to their tenants. Rather, Apple owns its platform and charges rent to vendors just like Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft do over their platforms. Spotify just doesn’t like paying.
