Wow. Carmakers are going to hate this, but I think it's great:

A new California bill would require all new cars to contain speed governors that prevent them from going 10 mph+ over the speed limit.

@davidzipper We do this in the EU already.
Now if you just tell me how cars are supposed to reliably tell the speed limit.

Analysing video for signs is highly reliable (in the data science way), >90%.

GPS location (does have a problem with parallel roads, so is that the city road inside the neighbourhood, or the interstate?) + map data (needs constant updating and will never we 100% up to date).

So yes, it's one cool gadget more that in practice one needs to turn off after powering on a car.

@davidzipper In the EU actually, AFAIK, it's been mandatory for all new car types for the last 3 years or so, but from July 2024 all new cars registered for the first time for road use will require this (and half a dozen other gadgets).

@davidzipper The only people who think this is a good idea are people who don’t understanding anything about cars or how traffic works. It either doesn’t work at all or is too dangerous to actually use. It also opens up the possibility for hackers to control your car remotely.

@davidzipper oh HELL no

@davidzipper . So like a seat belt for the car? With the increase in car crashes and pedestrian fatalities, I think this would be amazing. It would also be good for the environment.

@davidzipper

I wonder how well the car could know what the posted speed limit. I see the article mentions GPS. Would cities somehow provide geofencing data to manufacturers that's updatable OTA?

@ksawatsky @davidzipper The problem is that the car will have to know where you are at all times. And it has to be utterly foolproof, as you may be forced to suddenly slow down in the middle of the highway if the system thinks you’re not on the highway.

In reality, this is an old idea, and it has been rejected for being totally impossible to implement effectively.

@Hypx @ksawatsky @davidzipper We have had self-driving cars on the roads for years, but we don't have the technology yet for a speed governor?

Hypx,
@Hypx@mastodon.social avatar

@TiconderogaNo1 @ksawatsky @davidzipper We don't have self-driving cars that can go anywhere without human intervention.

TiconderogaNo1,
@TiconderogaNo1@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@Hypx @ksawatsky @davidzipper I didn't realize a key technical challenge was that we don't have the ability for cars to know where they are.

Hypx,
@Hypx@mastodon.social avatar

@TiconderogaNo1 @ksawatsky @davidzipper The problem is that it has to be 100% accurate and foolproof. It can also be easily defeated unless you take extreme measures to prevent that.

TiconderogaNo1,
@TiconderogaNo1@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@Hypx @ksawatsky @davidzipper That's absurd. It needs to have some logical failsafe and potentially some redundancy. There are plenty of ways to do that.

Hypx,
@Hypx@mastodon.social avatar

@TiconderogaNo1 @ksawatsky @davidzipper The problem is that the only foolproof failsafe is to let the driver turn it off anytime he wants. Except now it doesn't really work anymore.

TiconderogaNo1,
@TiconderogaNo1@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@Hypx @ksawatsky @davidzipper There are plenty of other solutions, but I get that you like to drive whatever speed you feel like.

Hypx,
@Hypx@mastodon.social avatar

@TiconderogaNo1 @ksawatsky @davidzipper You mean to say that many people don't like following the speed limit, so any such system won't actually work.
