Prom was in the "boys'" gym (the girls had the one built in about 1931). I designed and built the decorations each year. Teahouse of the August Moon one year, Camelot the next. Music was R & B. We'd spend our whole budget on the band, such as Mary Wells or Maurice Williams. @flexghost Tired and drinking plain sparkling water tonight. Had zero interest in prom while in high school, but finally attended when I was in my late 20s. I was dating a teacher and we went as chaperones. Had a great time!

(I couldn't stand the song until I saw my son's 4th grade class go nuts on it when I was chaperoning their mixer in the gym. You just can't hate on that.)

I see and feel the pain and desperation she portrays so well, and it makes me want to be able to — if nothing else — hold out a hand and say, "Here, hold my hand, if it helps." Because sometimes everyone needs a hand to hold. Sometimes we're all broken. And sometimes, never more so than when everyone around us is happy and joyful.
Which is why I thought of it. Who is driving you home from the prom?
@zakalwe I like the movie. I was relatively new to the country during prom and had no idea what was going on or why everyone kept pointing and whispering at everyone. In retrospect it seems fun!

I don’t recall my proms specifically, the after parties yes, my senior prom was forgettable, except the after party, it a Friday night and we had a track meet that late afternoon, I doubled in both the mile and 2 mile, and was exhausted. Eventually got second wind at house party, played frisbee at sunrise. I do remember this song, one of my forever favorites prom excluded. Yes, there was a girl.
@DCampbell I was still new to this country and had no idea what one was really until I was already in one. But the more movies I watch the more fondly I think about them. You should have a prom for your family!
My family prom would be like thanksgiving dinner in formal wear and we'd be arguing over the music, unless we had a prom planning committee, which, there would be arguing... I moved across the country.
@flexghost And,At senior prom, I pulled into the parking lot same time as starting quarterback, he looks at me and points astonished I'm wearing same rented tux as him, like, there was maybe 3x choices, we're both in that ridiculous powder blue velvet lapels frilly shirt, same as several other guys. Best laugh I had at prom, immediately confirmed how silly it all was; sorry, idea may be good in spirit but reality was awkward and superficial... was I too cool for prom?
And,Thanks for your share! I'm an immigrant also, may have mentioned, came from a far away country up north called Canada, at a very young age. Grew up NY as an alien until Naturalized.
You've figured us out! THAT was my problem in HS, for for word sorry, in western NY they would say Saw-ry and I would say sore-y, and the biggest laugh I got was when I would say "PARdon me", at best they may say excuse me. Canadians nice, nice funny talkers.
