@echoingfrog Just came across your profile and rather than starring all of your posts, I just want to say that all of your haiku are lovely. Nice also to see kigo and kireji (or equivalent) in English language haiku. Bravo!

I sent an email to the folks over at the "Jesus, He gets Us" campaign.

I pointed out that if they look at the source material, Jesus is part of the Trinity, so Jesus' correct pronoun would be "them".

I have not, as yet, heard back.

I remain hopeful.

@chriswho True, but in John 18:5, Jesus clearly indicates "I am he", thus setting the precedent for all Christians to specify their pronouns

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in a relationship?

Mine might sound kind of dark in relation to the question, but here goes:

People change, and they should, it's part of being a person. Some people are lucky, and they change in the same direction, but some don't, and that's okay too. There's no shame in leaving a relationship or changing the nature of a relationship that no longer serves you. We are all taught that every relationship, whether romantic or friendship, is supposed to last forever, but nothing is forever, and forcing something that no longer works, just ends in anger and bitterness. Knowing when to let go is as important as knowing when to hold on through a rough patch, and how to know either of those things is the most cliché advice of all, COMMUNICATE.

seanpatrickphd,
@seanpatrickphd@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr That the way someone enters into and resolves conflict says volumes about them and their relationship to you.

A lot of people seem to think it's not normal or desirable to have conflicts with your partner, but my experience has been the opposite. Being able to disagree civilly and make up quickly afterwards is a much better indicator of a healthy relationship than never coming into conflict at all.

Subject your relationship to the "IKEA test".

Had a poem published recently in the Spring '24 issue of Consilience. The knowledge argument is one of my favorite things to come out of the philosophy of mind, and I'm thrilled to have a poem about it out there.

Dune and Ender's Game are probably no-brainers.

One SF author I really enjoyed at that age was John Varley. "The Golden Globe" is still one of my favorite SF novels of all time, "Steel Beach" close behind.

A military SF series I enjoyed around that age starts with "Midshipman's Hope" by David Feintuch.

Greg Bear was another one of my favorites at that age. I started with "Eon".

Maybe all those are hopelessly dated by now! But those are the ones I can recommend from experience.

Probably going to just hang out with the dogs a bit. I can’t take much more of this fucking world and I’m so tired of living right now.

Also I get that I’ve just been doing a lot of unhinged ranting lately because it’s just… what else CAN I do? What good does anything do anyway?

seanpatrickphd,
@seanpatrickphd@mastodon.social avatar

@mybarkingdogs I initially favorited this post before deciding to just leave a comment to avoid misunderstandings - I just wanted to say I feel for you. I have had similar feelings about the world and the value of doing anything in it...I just wanted to let you know this was seen, was extremely relatable, and generated sympathy from a stranger on the internet, for whatever that's worth.

Before I do my housework
I'll throw in a quick question and hope for a few answers

Thanks to everyone who contributed to my poll, I wasn't expecting this result

A quick question for all those who speak English well.
"Nicht würdig meiner Liebe“ German title.
Deep l translates it as "Not worthy my love".
The whole thing is supposed to sound hard and heartless with "Not worthy my love" it sounds a bit too soft for me because of the worthy...

Could the translation be "Not worth my love"?

seanpatrickphd,
@seanpatrickphd@mastodon.social avatar

@si_irini Hmm, maybe the quantitative connotation of "not worth" is more appropriate then! Like "I decided not to spend my love on you" and not "you were not deserving of my love". Certainly I think the phrase "not worth" is more demeaning, because it's a reduction to materialism instead of a moral value judgment with "worthy" (the way Thor is "worthy" in the Marvel movies, for instance.)

I love poetry translation, it's such a challenging and interesting thing to do. Best of luck!
