Mass drownings at sea are to the EU what mass shootings are to the US.

  • It keeps happening.

  • And every time it happens, politicians pretend to be concerned, yet keep in place the government policies at the root of the problem.

  • So, it keeps happening.

@andrewstroehlein "Deeply concerned" is EU-speak for "thoughts and prayers".

I hesitate to say that's a 'good ' analogy, but it's accurate. Horrible. B

What can be done?

Start with official, proactive search and rescue at sea.

Some EU states have drastically reduced search-and-rescue capacity at sea, and even restricted private groups from doing it.

@andrewstroehlein ...and give this people a legal way to come to Europe where they are needed.

lispi314,

@andrewstroehlein Also not actively sinking their boats would help.

pmroman,

@andrewstroehlein An absurd comparison: someone shooting a firearm with the intent to kill, and someone failing to rescue everyone on a boat in breach of each and every navigation /IMO rule known to man kind with the purpose of unlawfully enter another nation thousands of miles away. That kind of article, poorly thought, inaccurate and biased can only hurt the efforts of those working to resolve this issue for decades.

fanf42,

@andrewstroehlein @aral and we are blind to the obvious reasons that produce it.
And these reasons are there to please a right part of the electorate, for which lives matter less than being in the "in" group

snack,

@andrewstroehlein Your comparison is not valid. Economic migrants, mostly young males, choose to board those boats and know the risk. Kids being slaughtered because they went to school can't be compared.

If children are on those boats by choice of the parents that is a tragedy. Adults can look after themselves so the consequences are on them. That's just bad luck.

JamesBazan,
@JamesBazan@mastodon.coffee avatar

@andrewstroehlein I am reading that as many as 100 children were below decks, and many others as well. As many as 500 people may be missing.
And I doubt even this will shock the consciences of those who pander to nativists.

LawrenceShop,

@andrewstroehlein Do you mean they make failing fishing boats and human smuggling into to sell online, retail and through illegal transfers as a product of their constitution? Sorry but I think there is false equivalency in your post.

Silverpantz,

@andrewstroehlein ... does Europe actively convince people to get on boats they know will capsize then proclaim that nothing can be done and also its wrong to judge people that sell boats prone to capsizing? Do they then make it impossible to know who made/sold/owned/traded the boat? If the fuel was specific to capsizing boats do they subsidize and shield the fuel makers? (I honestly don't know any of this, but if they do, that's wild).

Okay, after reading the replies, I’m clear on why you posted about what prompts you to block people. Felt like I was back on Twitter.

@andrewstroehlein
Do EU pols claim that bad guys with boats can be effectively countered by good guys with boats?

Archie8,

@andrewstroehlein What an absurd comparison. Who's killing the migrants Andrew?

ash,

@andrewstroehlein They feel less invested because those suffering aren't nationals and idk whether the US' [vocal concern + political deadlock] or the EU's is more disappointing.

Mitch_Yea,

@andrewstroehlein Immigration is ultimately a food thing , but migrants need to do it legally so they can be kept track of until they gain citizenship and so they dont end up missing like these unfortunate souls

@andrewstroehlein Every time I see this, my imagination shows me children taking their last breaths in the salty water. The world has lost it's heart and replaced it with a dollar.

Felipe_B,
ChessNord,

@andrewstroehlein But they can just fix it like we do here in the US with thoughts and prayers. I don't see a problem here.

@andrewstroehlein
As long as smugglers and NGO’s earning fortunes of money with trafficking of immigrants these tragedies will never stop

It’s the failure of that it doesn’t make 100% clear that it will never be tolerated to enter Europe in an illegal way

As long as this isn’t 100% clear and also in this way communicated, will this for certain people and organizations profitable human trafficking remain to still exist 🤷🏻‍♀️

andrewstroehlein,
@andrewstroehlein@mastodon.social avatar

@musictraveler First, applying for asylum is a right, recognized in law. When governments deny people that right, those governments are acting unlawfully, not the powerless people trying to apply. Second, if there were safe options for migrants to travel, they wouldn't pay smugglers to go on dangerous boats. It would put the traffickers out of business in a heartbeat. It shows governments don't actually care about traffickers, because if they wanted to stop them, they could, but they don't.

musictraveler,
@musictraveler@mastodon.online avatar

@andrewstroehlein
The people on dangerous boats know that they have no good and rightful reason for an asylum apply

They would be refused right away when they use the normal travel options

There are many immigrants from Africa already in Europe who have no legitimate asylum right but still they refuse to go back 🤷🏻‍♀️ and causing many troubles

It’s logic that Europe try to stop them from entering

A collapse of the European society is for no one good

almaember,

@andrewstroehlein I don't think they're the same, even if they are similar.

Mass shootings keep happening in the US due to inaction, failing to take adequate measures to prevent them.

In the EU, at the very least a lot of the drownings are caused the active participation of EU agencies (chiefly amongst them Frontex). Here, even their complete inaction would be vastly preferable to their current actions.

That is not to defend either of these, obviously.

Renegade_GDI,

@andrewstroehlein it's not like Somalian pirates have never been addressed... need more navy patrols, to catch those who tried to violate border integrity and deport them

rejzor,
@rejzor@mastodon.world avatar

@andrewstroehlein so, how again is EU at fault for ILLEGALS crossing mediterranean sea using makeshift boats and drowning in the process?

south_lib,

@andrewstroehlein
Not society, but the people in charge.

Some people in congress haven't learnt that yet.

CDeorum,

@andrewstroehlein Are EU nations curbing immigration in spite of their citizens’ votes and opinions?

andrewstroehlein,
@andrewstroehlein@mastodon.social avatar

@CDeorum I do not believe there is polling data showing that a majority of EU voters want children to drown en masse.

CDeorum,

@andrewstroehlein I do not believe there is a law in the EU the says “drown children en masse”, either.
So, I’m unsure where this emotionally manipulative post is supposed to go.
If this is a result of immigration policy AND democracy won’t let you have open borders, then it looks like we need to adjust the laws in a realistic manner instead of seeking social media likes.
