This has been a warm winter, and it's the first winter in the seven or eight since I've lived in this cottage that I haven't turned the furnace on even once.

@MLE_online warm winters are weird, the last couple have been super mild here, but this one is proper cold so far, and that makes me feel better.

the other night, our bad kitty managed to turn the thermostat up to 85°f in her furious pursuit of a bug. i was in the unheated basement at the time, and thought the house was on fire when i came upstairs to the swelling house. nice stress test for the 60 year old boiler

@misternineham Not to get too sidetracked, but boiler? Is your house heated with steam?

misternineham,
@misternineham@mastodon.social avatar

@MLE_online it has hot-water radiant heat, so i guess it's not technically a boiler

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@misternineham is that like, tubes that run through the floor? Or do you have old fashioned radiators in the rooms?

misternineham,
@misternineham@mastodon.social avatar

@MLE_online tho it does call itself a boiler, so..

@misternineham I like the R. Crumb-style FBC in that logo. And the flames

@MLE_online Same here. We haven't run the heat at all this winter. What's more, the past few days I've had all the doors and windows open all day long. :-)

@JohnS_AZ Same! I rode my bike to the dollar store yesterday and I was sweaty by the time I got there

@stefani It's almost February. Southern California has a short winter, and it's not likely to be getting much colder at this point

mathaetaes,

@MLE_online While I know mentally that this is a terrible, terrible thing... being able to open up the house for heat during the day and not run the heater in January makes it really hard to internalize that fact.

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@mathaetaes I have internalized it! If it's hot at the wrong time of the year and it's been too long since it's rained, I feel antsy and depressed
