Somebody really needs to start a clothing shop for men that guarantees to keep items in stock indefinitely. None of this 'item is discontinued', 'oh red isn't in fashion this year', 'we continually update our range' etc. I just want to buy the same item when the current one wears out without having to think about whether the alternatives will fit, look right etc.

@pwaring @krishnadraws
Used to be possible to some degree until their corporate ownership trades them like poker chips to another company.

Brand loyalty means nothing now due to this abuse.

I had a pair of doc Martin’s that lasted me a decade. The next pair lasted a year.

Rockports have switched ownership almost yearly. I buy a new pair every year, they wear out quickly. The shoe size I request might not change, but the actual fit can.

Brand name is no longer reliable for food or clothing.

lydiaconwell,

@pwaring Buy the clothes you want then glue them to your body

Penguinflight,

@pwaring Testify!

Fuck your fast fashion; where's me black combats?

BoredomFestival,
@BoredomFestival@sfba.social avatar

@pwaring omg yes. The older I get the less I want to mess with new fashions. Give me something sensible that fits well and I don't have to spend time thinking about.

@pwaring I just want cheap clothes that don't fall apart after five washes :/

For women too, please.

@pwaring i want this for shoes, too.

@danieldurrans@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@pwaring @n0rm This is why I bought 6 pairs of exactly the same jeans (keeping fingers crossed I don't gain or lose weight)

n0rm,

@danieldurrans @pwaring yes, I do that kind of thing too :)

coldclimate,
@coldclimate@hachyderm.io avatar

@pwaring I have seriously considered shopping only from industrial/uniform type companies. Sale also goes for plates and flatware, restaurants want replacement items for 20 years, not a new fashionable line

pwaring,
@pwaring@fosstodon.org avatar

@coldclimate Yes, I remember my mum stocking up on crockery when BHS were going to discontinue the line (3 kids = frequent breakage)

alan,

@pwaring Filed under: Alan, how come you are always wearing blue jeans and a black t-shirt?

Geoffairey,
@Geoffairey@mastodon.social avatar

@pwaring @n0rm That’s right. I don’t want Fashion, I want clothes!

@pwaring
NGL, I'd like the same thing for women.

Rayspekt,

@pwaring Let's make it even harder. You buy one pair of trousers in your size and then you won't be allowed to purchase a different size. Keeps you motivated to stay in shape or you'll fall through the clothing system.

Denali,

@Rayspekt This seems like a bad business idea

helle,

@pwaring on Zalando there is the Urban Classics brand. Who do that for mens and even womens, so I picked up a new simple black skirt and some baseball t-shirts. Yes even women have standard, not fashion hit stuff.

timo21,
@timo21@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@pwaring yes, absolutely. One time I found the perfect trousers, bought them for a few years, then they were discontinued. But I found the store that carries that brands discontinued items and stocked up on them.

    @swansinflight @pwaring Same here with shoes. I've found that size EU46 Vibram FiveFingers work excellently for me. (Yes, I'm weird.) I fear they'll stop making them, so have a bit of an Imelda Marcos streak with buying nearly new ones off eBay whenever they appear. I've worn minimalist shoes for over a decade now and my biomechanics hate the feel of "normal" shoes.

    liw,

    @pwaring As it happens, I've developed some sartorial ambitions this year. Given my body shape, and the realities of the economics of mass-produced clothing, I can basically not ever find anything ready-made that fits me well.

    Fortunately, made-to-measure is not very expensive to buy, in comparison, and much cheaper in the long term, as it lasts much, much longer.

    jonnynexus,

    @pwaring Yes! It should be like Billy bookcases at IKEA. Once you know you like it, you can keep buying it.

    chrisjrob,

    @pwaring I'd settle for clothes being made in my size - my legs are 33", but I have to choose between 32" (embarrasingly short) and 34" (dragging on the ground). Hopefully this will be resolved before we put people on Mars.

    pwaring,
    @pwaring@fosstodon.org avatar

    @chrisjrob Yeah, I have that problem too. Slim waist (28-30) is an absolute pain when shopping for jeans, and everyone seems to think if your legs get longer your waist gets wider.

    PhilRandal,

    @pwaring @chrisjrob and don't even mention shirt lengths. Both body length and arm length are too short for most shirts which would otherwise fit me.

    @pwaring some brands do this. I have been wearing converse and 501s for 40 years now :-)

    @pwaring@fosstodon.org avatar

    M&S is particularly bad for this - and for not keeping a complete order history (they keep changing IT backends) or allowing search by product code.

    If I wanted fast fashion, I would go to Asos or Boohoo.

    gidorah,

    @pwaring hebtro.co are excellent. Whilst they do change stock, all their stuff is very high quality. And certainly not fast fashion.

    penguin42,
    @penguin42@mastodon.org.uk avatar

    @pwaring I'd been wearing the same model number of underwear from M&S for about 30+ years but they've just discontinued it. Hmm.

    krn,

    @pwaring depends which product code you search for too. The Txx codes change often. The eight digit ones shouldn’t but don’t encode size.

  • krn,

    @pwaring eight digit code works if the product is still available. It’s between two heavy lines on the label. But that number changes if the supplier or product changes slightly.
