I am once again reminded how much I hate reading paper books. My ebook reader is in a very prominent space on my home screen & there’s zero friction for me to read. So I read a lot.

When I read a paper book it takes me so much activation energy to take up the damned thing. Like I’ve been trying to read “Salt Fat Acid Heat.” for 2 years solid but I’m still fighting the preface.

One of the main reasons is light and me trying keep my flat dim in the evenings for better sleep. Maybe in summer…

@hynek I don’t know how much I hate reading paper books because I don’t think I’ve read one in 12 years or so, but I was surprised at where this went. For me reading on a phone or tablet is not nearly as good as reading on a front-lit epaper device. Once the Kindle Paperwhite came out I was like, “Well, never need to read a physical book again I guess!”

@pganssle I’ve got an Oasis that I also prefer over paper books, but I find it slow and laggy and clunky. My iPhone Max has the perfect size for a reading device.

I only read paper books when I know a) it benefits from the format due to illustrations or code examples or b) I know I might use it as a reference. SFAH ticks both boxes, but it’s an uphill battle.

@hynek this is the opposite of how I am (not wrong of course - we just work differently)

the ebook on my phone/tablet has to compete with all the other things on my phone, so I pick up the device and forget that I was going to read. A paper book, though, keeps the phone out of my hands - maybe even in a different room - so I read longer without interruption.

For me, also, watching the bookmark move each time I read is a very physical reminder of the progress through a book

@bengerman yeah I think it’s great everybody gets to choose what works for them best

@hynek

  1. Take your current book to where you spend time waiting or idle at home—like the kitchen table
  2. Get a reading light, in the evening clip it to your book
  3. No screens in the toilet ✨

I find that “zero friction to start e-reading” easily becomes “zero friction to stop” once the first distracting thought comes.

(Salt Fat Acid Heat is a great physical book!)
