Looking in vain, so far, for a good rain jacket (for walking/hiking) that doesn't insist that I advertise the company that's selling it.

I really dislike this trend, and it seems to be getting worse.

Circling back:

My brother told me about a Lands End rain jacket that is waterproof and doesn't require that I serve as a "walking billboard" for the company.

Retailers: I go out of my way to find clothing of this kind, and the replies to my previous post suggest that I'm not alone in my annoyance with your increasingly common practice.

Oh, I bought that coat, which you can see here: https://www.landsend.com/products/mens-waterproof-rain-jacket/id_330102?attributes=12520,43307,43326,43398,44255,44379,44967

@dangillmor Go find a rain jacket in a thrift store and use a sharpie to blot out the logo.

@dangillmor I have had a rule since the 1960s. If your logo is on my T shirt it means I got it for free OR I am being paid to wear it (this has never happened) and that is all it means. Pro tip the shirt still works if worn inside out.

@dangillmor Columbia has a versatile jacket/vest liner. Lightweight, but warm and the logo pretty small. other than that, a construction trash bag?

@dangillmor I recommend rain jackets from Petit Bateau, they are excellent and have no visible logo: https://www.petit-bateau.fr/cire-long-et-leger-en-matiere-recyclee-femme-homme-smoking/A052N03.html

What you said reminded me that the other day my 3 year old told me: “Mom! Wear your alligator shoes.” I had no idea what she was talking about… until I realized she wanted me to put on my Lacoste sneakers (they have a tiny golden alligator on the side).

Now I want to re-read Naomi Klein’s excellent

@dangillmor I have a Pacific Trail PAC TECH rain jacket with no logo but I couldn’t find if/where it’s still sold. There’s a packable Coofandy jacket on Amazon with no logos that has good reviews and it’s fairly inexpensive.

@dangillmor Isn’t that so annoying? I have the same distaste for being a walking billboard for brands. I just sent this back because the fit was wrong, but the brand emblem is really small, at least.)

@dangillmor Looks to me like Cleverhood has two rain jackets without logos https://cleverhood.com/collections/jackets-2

@dangillmor This is likely to avoid copyright issues and lawsuits which are very common in the fashion/clothing world. It sucks for sure but it is what it is.

dangillmor,
@dangillmor@mastodon.social avatar

@joeo10 Sorry that doesn't make sense to me.

joeo10,
@joeo10@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@dangillmor I have noticed in the last few years especially where clothing manufacturers put their logos onto everything in order to attempt to avoid these issues.

I know it doesn't make sense even to me although the Louboutin red sole case a few years back kind of caused a lot of clothing and fashion companies to be cautious.

dangillmor,
@dangillmor@mastodon.social avatar

@joeo10 It's trivial for a counterfeiter to put the logo on. So I don't get their reasoning (and don't buy it).

DeRochier,
@DeRochier@mastodon.social avatar

@dangillmor Agreed. It’s become a challenge with glasses, too. If a company wants me to be a walking billboard displaying their logo, they need to pay me.

@DeRochier @dangillmor Costco Optical or Zenni Optical both have lots of frame options with no logos or very very minimal ones (I have Champion brand glasses from Costco that barely have a tiny logo on the very skinny frames.

(Not shockingly both are among the only actual independent optical firms around. Nearly everything else vision related is owned by the same massive conglomerate)
