Seeing folks talking about BlueSky since it opened, but seemingly not realizing it's likely on a downward trajectory?
Now that it's public, it's the same as BeReal and the rest: a Twitter clone. Well, except it's worse than those, it's less featured. It's very likely toast.
Mastodon's got a unique selling point to at least keep interest funneling back. BlueSky had that, but basically fumbled the federation ball when they realized normies didn't care. They decided to just be Twitter—but then the normies went to Threads for their advert-algo slop.
EDIT: BlueSky is now basically a biodome for Weird Twitter / Terminally Online Shitposter's Club, and we'll see if that's self supporting. I am in that culture! But. Uh. Yeah.
@glassbottommeg On the other hand, Bluesky has a block function that actually works; a culture of block first ask questions later; and shared block lists.

BlueSky just isn't at the social scale where that seems to matter yet? Or it wasn't anyways. Likely will be with going public now.
@glassbottommeg I wish I could concisely express what I think is the weirdness with the platform, because I have thoughts about it, but also come across like a crazy person. Especially to people invested in the platform.
@RethinkJeff I mean, I'm there! I do sort of like it. Just. It 100% is not Twitter 2.0, and can't be, and their only real identity is trying to be Twitter, and that has thus far created nothing but doomed websites. So I'm not holding my breath.
(and i would reeaaaally rather see folks come/stay here as a result cus I don't wanna lose 'em when it explodes 😭 )
Oh, huh- doing a quick check, apparently normies didn't go to Threads either? Threads apparently settled out to just, brands talking at brands, and a place for preexisting Instagram influencers to post text. lol.
Pretty sure normies shrugged and just went to TikTok, Instagram, or- you know, fucked off to meatspace to do normie things.
@djf1107 Honest to gods, I think this is literally hypnospace heh. Mastodon is just weird and underground enough that it does that have that early internet vibe.
@glassbottommeg Why do I keep seeing this take? It's definitely lots of influencers and brands, and the vibes suck big time, but anecdotally those accounts are getting tons of engagement, and Facebook is reporting 130 million MAUs.
@VamptVo presumably because, like Instagram, their algorithm heavily favors brands / larger influencers.
Folks anecdotally find it's useless for building an audience from nothing. Which is, again, extremely like Instagram. Kinda only works if you come in already having a large audience (willing to look you up there).
@glassbottommeg for ages is a bit too much 💀early in the begining it was either iOS or invitation-only, this was just a few months ago, that's why I asked. Anyway thanks for the info
@piercethevit oh! sorry! 2020 probably broke my perception of time. Suffices to say I don't have an iOS device, and I've been on BlueSky for uh. Long enough I've stopped thinking about whenever I joined up. But yeah! It's on there now, so if you were waiting for that, yup! yay.
@glassbottommeg you know, I used to be really good at that mode of being online, enjoyed it a lot during Peak Twitter and sometimes wish that element was more pronounced here, but I'm probably just better off without it. I think I'll just chill.
