... At this point she's about a year away from getting divorced and marrying Glinner, then going on X to rant about purity of bodily essence and the need for more Aryan babies.

@cstross
There's something so essentially missing from a person who gets rich from selling books to children and then decides some children are the Wrong Sort of children and shouldn't have rights.

hittitezombie,
@hittitezombie@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@petealexharris @cstross Didn't she write a child as cursed, then caused the child to be killed, then had to write a complete play to justify the child's death?

cstross,
@cstross@wandering.shop avatar

@hittitezombie @petealexharris No idea, I bailed on her work after the ickiness became obvious three books in.

thiagocsf,

@cstross in the Harry Potter series? Out of curiosity, what did you pick up only three books in?

cstross,
@cstross@wandering.shop avatar

@thiagocsf Harry Potter. Began reading in the mid-90s to see what the fuss was about, got into the third book on the strength of being a glutton for punishment, thought "fuck this shit", and refused to go back for more ever again. (Haven't seen the movies.)

@petealexharris @cstross do you think maybe it was the rape?

simon_brooke,
@simon_brooke@mastodon.scot avatar

@petealexharris @cstross thing is, at the start of writing those books she was ENORMOUSLY positive and sympathetic to kids who were different, outsiders. That's what the whole series was all about. And now she's done a complete U turn. It's hard to understand, psychologically, what happened to her, but whatever it was it wasn't good.

@cstross Not for the first time, I’d point out how easy it is to subvert a law if you have (a) enough money to bring what amounts to an endless private prosecution, and (b) a game plan of steamrolling underfunded tribunals and boards while avoiding senior courts.

Once you’ve established any edge case as a precedent, and have the funds to crush appeals, you’re good to go.

@cstross So it turns out that HP is a dystopian horror, where our hero, Voldemort is thwarted in his quest for pure blood by the vicious wokerati.

davidfetter,

@cstross I don't think it'll take as long as a year for her to go full metal Nazi. She built her empire on bigoted stereotypes.

cstross,
@cstross@wandering.shop avatar

@davidfetter The bigoted stereotypes are deeply unsurprising in hindsight given the source material she was reworking—the 1920s-1950s English Public [Boarding] School novel, itself dripping with nostalgia for the Arnold System which was designed to train colonial administrators and aristocratic rulers (i.e. elitism and imperialism were baked into it at source).

@cstross what exactly is so offensive about this statement?

> "This is a crucial case for us all. Protection for those with the protected characteristic of gender reassignment will remain unchanged in the Equality Act, regardless of whether they have a GRC [gender recognition certificate] but for women to have full rights and protection it is important that 'sex' is clarified as referring to biology. Your help is invaluable and we appreciate all your efforts in fundraising and spreading the word."

@feld @cstross
It says nothing about those who haven't yet transitioned, but want to.

mage,

@cstross with "getting divorced and marrying" and "going on X" my brain created the worst possible couple : Rowling/Musk.

cstross,
@cstross@wandering.shop avatar

@mage I confess that I thought of that first, but cringed away from it. (Luckily there's no way Musk would marry her, she's 58 so a bit past it for bearing more Scions for the Master Race.)
