TIL that "-dale" is an old English word for a peaceful valley. I have worked in Rosedale, Ridgedale, and Brookdale Center malls in Minneapolis and never thought about what the names meant. I guess the Placedale name is sort of a Minnesota thing too.

@docpop a timely post, since the theme of today's xword puzzle was "tautological place names"

Sahara desert, Lake Tahoe, East Timor and Mississippi River are all the same sort of thing.

@drawks oh that's fun, thanks for sharing that!

As a young Dale I needed to know why my name was in a song.

@dlaroe my spouse is a military brat, and this was the first thing they said when I mentioned -dales to them.

"-ham" is also an old word for a settlement or town. A hamlet is a small town. "Birmingham" is the town of Beormingas (an old Anglo-Saxon tribe).

Similarly, -ton is a suffix based on the word "town". For example, Charleston is a town named after King Charles.

It's funny when you see towns like Southampton or Wolverhampton that use both suffixes. Hampton, VA is literally a town called "town town".

@docpop I love this! Thank you for schooling us in all these great old world suffixes!!

…reminds me of possibly my favorite translation-turned-name… The La Brea Tar Pits, which translates to “the the tar tar pits” 😂🤣🫠

@docpop so… Bloomingdale’s?

@exkclamation oh duh, I didn't even think of that giant chain with -dale in the name. Thanks for reminding me of that one.

@docpop (ps. sorry, I didn’t mean that to come off as snarky) …wild to find out what -dale means, and also a bit weird that they use the possessive ‘s in their name. 🫠

@exkclamation no snark detected. It was a fun reminder of how I don't notice things around me until I notice them... and see them everywhere.

@docpop no doubt!

I had to check online and make sure it was still a company, and not just a hazy memory from the 1980’s suburbs 🤣
