A sequel that survives in the shadow of a classic. I much prefer the next film, but Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970) still has a daring ending.

And full of ruins that prolong the iconic last scene of the first film.

It did stand on its own but like all 'SciFi' movies of that era it let itself down with cringeworthy characterisations and very thin science... You can forgive 3rd rate special effects but you can't forgive bad acting and poor scripting.
Similar to the second half of Logans Run...
A great story premise let down by the inability of the movie maker and actors to tell the story credibly.

@Barebower @TheSpaceshipper Escape is a really worthy sequel in my opinion. Poses genuinely interesting sci-fi questions, and has loads of pathos, warm characters, and a kind of scary feel of inevitability to it.
