Calckey offers an interesting feature that I wish Mastodon apps included - the ability to view from what PLATFORM an account comes from. It's missing one thing, which is a clickable link that would take you to the official site of each platform to check it out. I think the beta API from FediDB might be able to assist with that.

Would love to see this in more apps, regardless of platform. Gives casual users a chance to check out other pockets of the fediverse out there.

vyr,

@box464 fwiw, you could implement this client-side by calling the nodeinfo API, but it has privacy implications (like all features that involve talking to something that isn't your home server). makes more sense to build a remote instance information API.

@vyr I looked into it for a split minute weeks ago. There were issues accessing the info SOMEtimes via client code due to CORS.

Was thinking it could use some kind of key/value store cache node.js API - pass the instance URL and return the software name, logo and url. If it doesn’t exist, call out to a server side API to do the work and get around CORS complaints.

Then the beta of FediDB API came along which appears to have all that info already.

vyr,

@box464 yeah sorry i meant as an instance server feature, server-side. i wouldn't want to introduce a dependency on a third-party API. years of experience have taught me that they have a half-life of a few months around here.

freeplay,

@box464 That actually shows the name of the instance the user is on! It does show the actual software name on hover though:

@freeplay I’ve seen both..like in the screenshot I attached the mastodon one doesn’t list the instance, just “mastodon”. Or maybe the instance name is cut off?

mia,

@box464 yup, the other misskey variants also have this feature.

it’s useful in a way because if you know that someone is using mastodon, they won’t see large custom emoji, emoji reactions, misskey-flavored markdown, inline quote posts, more than 4 media attachments, etc. etc.

@mia Ah, I didn’t think about that! As the fediverse grows, that will be even more important.

@box464 <Nim> foundkey and misskey (last I knew) have this feature too!

kainoa,

@TransGal4872 @box464 yeah, but there's one key difference: hovering over the ticker in Calckey will show you the name of the software!

tost,

@kainoa @TransGal4872 @box464
come on calc, you know better than this
this feature was discussed in the misskey repo before foundkey existed,
and then implemented by johann and I (I mostly made it work with the local instance) before calckey ever existed

it was even commented on by one of the japanese developers from misskey that started contributing to calckey recently

kainoa,

@tost @TransGal4872 @box464 I actually wasn't aware that foundkey had that hover -- last time I had an account it didn't do that. I also never saw your/johann's impl, although I do remember it being discussed.

tost,
kainoa,

@tost @TransGal4872 @box464 hm, I def had an account on mkabs like a couple months ago. I do remember the software name in the ticker presented at the left, but I don't remember it showing on hover... guess it's just a coincidence 🤷

BlakeL,

@tost @kainoa @TransGal4872 @box464 calckey (and foundkey) is a fork of misskey, it should have everything it had before it got forked.

tost,

@BlakeL @kainoa @TransGal4872 @box464 my man it was not in misskey, I just told you who wrote the damn feature

vyr,

@box464 i also wish any Fedi apps propagated info on the client that posted a post, since that was a good way to discover new ones. there's an AP generator attribute for it, and the Mastodon API already supports it for local posts and has a checkbox opting into sharing it with your home instance, but the info isn't federated.

@vyr ooh you’re taking about the client app like Ivory or Sengi, etc. Yes! Ice Cubes shows that when it’s available. And my little playground does too.

vyr,

@box464 yep. it's only available for posts on your home server.
