Every few weeks the same thing with Signal for Mac. Same for WhatsApp. Only iMessage gets this right and treats non-phone devices as first-class clients that can actually log in on their own.

guicane,
@guicane@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber and telegram which is where most of the other apps copy their features from, highly recommend it but yeah it’s not very popular in America I guess

com,
@com@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber I use Signal and WhatsApp on macOS and have never had to relink to mobile. 🤷‍♂️

Fauzruk,
@Fauzruk@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber The probable reason for this is that ultimately Signal and WhatsApp are not keeping storage of the e2e messages.

They are discarded as soon all active clients have received it and those clients expires after some inactivity time.

xavez,
@xavez@me.dm avatar

@gruber hell of a lot easier to use texts.com. Not a native client unfortunately. But it doesn’t seem to have this problem. And you get the added benefit of a clean social inbox 😅

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@xavez I subscribe to Texts, but I run into the same problem there. Texts's WhatsApp support was completely broken just two weeks ago.

astifter,
@astifter@mastodon.astifter.com avatar

@gruber Also: iMessage is the only one treating my Android phone as non-class client.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@astifter Yeah but that's by design. What I'm complaining about clearly isn't.

ristkof,
@ristkof@mastodon.social avatar
webjac,
@webjac@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber not only iMessage. Telegram does it nicely as well.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@webjac But Telegram is not encrypted, alas.

webjac,
@webjac@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber That’s right. You can open an encrypted chat on Telegram but it’s not the default and has limitations.

(Also, I truly think that Meta reads WhatsApp messages for advertising purposes, I have no evidence but also no doubts that’s the case)

console,
@console@dosgame.club avatar

@gruber I suffer from this all the time, especially with WhatsApp, which I don't use every day. Also with Signal on my second MacBook, which is often closed for days at a time. On my primary Mac, however, where Signal is open 24/7, there are no problems.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@console Yeah, it feels like the problem is related to credentials expiring too quickly.

mwyman,
@mwyman@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber I went to start signal on my iPhone recently, had been a while but I’ve used it previously on there, and it basically forced me to toss all my conversation history and existing contacts by asserting it needed to re-link — except my iPhone is the master link, so bye bye everything.

collin,
@collin@ruby.social avatar

@gruber I've always had trouble with these apps as well. iMessage is by far the best for me in pretty much every way.

andreasphh,
@andreasphh@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber Desktop-Signal will unlink after 30 days of inactivity. Works as designed 😈 https://support.signal.org/hc/en-us/articles/360007320551-Linked-Devices

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@andreasphh I guess that's my problem.

rob,
@rob@prosumer.dev avatar

@gruber Do you know what triggers it?

Curious, since I have never run into this myself (using Signal on iPhone, iPad, and Mac).

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@rob Apparently the linked-device connection expires after 30 days of not using it: https://support.signal.org/hc/en-us/articles/360007320551-Linked-Devices

nohillside,
@nohillside@smnn.ch avatar

@gruber Interesting. I use Signal on macOS daily, never got that message.

spitfire,
@spitfire@mastodon.social avatar

@nohillside @gruber Probably because you’re using it daily. I’m using it occasionally and it happens to me once in a while

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@spitfire @nohillside I don't use it daily either.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

The worst part isn't the time it takes to reconnect the Mac client to the iPhone “master" client. It's that because of the way Signal works, the Mac client is then forever missing whatever messages came in since last it was properly connected to Signal.

    @mrtnsnp @gruber Not using it enough. I think it times out after a few weeks.

    @gruber I feel better knowing I’m not the only person this has happened to and feels the same way

    doekman,
    @doekman@mastodon.nl avatar

    @gruber I liked the previous WhatsApp client better.

    And it’s a bloody shame nobody is using Messages (outside the us that is)

    gruber,
    @gruber@mastodon.social avatar

    @doekman I think new WhatsApp Mac client is clearly better -- has support for platform features like the Services menu for example.

    tweece,
    @tweece@techhub.social avatar

    @gruber Also the reason signal works like this is to fix a very real loophole in e2e - backups. iMessage backups are opt-in for encryption and require two pieces of apple hardware and a paid subscription. Anyone using iCloud backup or iMessage sync without advanced data protection (which is most) might as well be unencrypted

    gruber,
    @gruber@mastodon.social avatar

    @tweece True, but that's also only from law enforcement subpoenas. That's a problem, I agree, but the actual message comms are secure.

    tweece,
    @tweece@techhub.social avatar

    @gruber Tbh government intervention/monitoring is the #1 thing we should be worried about when it comes to messaging privacy. Who else would care to look? I think about those people in jail because of messenger data handed over to the government about having abortions in illegal states

    gruber,
    @gruber@mastodon.social avatar

    @tweece But no government can “monitor” iCloud backups. Again, I agree it's an issue, and I'd like to see Apple move iMessage backups for everyone to E2EE.

    chateaumarmont,
    @chateaumarmont@mastodon.social avatar

    @gruber I wish iMessage would get an android release. It's the best messaging app ever and would like to get rid of stuff like WhatsApp

    thorms11,
    @thorms11@mastodon.social avatar

    @gruber i have seen this a lot! for both Signal and Whatsapp.

    I think it is due to periods of inactivity. I don't use either daily.

    timbray,
    @timbray@cosocial.ca avatar

    @gruber maybe an iOS thing? Over in Android I never see this in either Signal or WhatsApp.

    Ciantic,
    @Ciantic@twit.social avatar

    @timbray @gruber That's a desktop thing, on iOS app and Android it, of course, keeps it logged in, but on desktop Mac, it won't.

    Same problem with WhatsApp on Safari iPad, you have to constantly log in if you want to use it.

    timbray, (edited )
    @timbray@cosocial.ca avatar

    @Ciantic @gruber Can disconfirm. I have a perfectly vanilla Mac and I rarely to never have to re-login.

    gruber,
    @gruber@mastodon.social avatar

    @timbray @Ciantic Do you use Signal on Mac daily (or nearly so)? I don't. I feel like I get signed out after a timeout period of some sort.

    timbray,
    @timbray@cosocial.ca avatar

    @gruber @Ciantic Yeah, I basically live in Signal; friends, family, media, collaborators.

    martbock,
    @martbock@mastodon.social avatar

    @gruber me neither. I open Signal on Mac maybe every few weeks and it wants me to re-authenticate almost every time.

    gruber,
    @gruber@mastodon.social avatar

    @timbray @Ciantic Huh, looks like my problem is that I sometimes go 30 days without launchibg the Signal and/or WhatsApp Mac clients:
